In 1935, her novel We Have Been Warned which dealt with rape and abortion was censored. In the same year she stood as Labour Candidate and in 1937, moved to Carradale where she still lives. This biography explores her literary and political life and career.

This study approaches the fiction of the 1930s through critical debates about genre, language and history, setting these in their original context, and discussing the generic forms most favoured by novelists at the time.
