Criticism has become so much a mental habit and has changed so many things that we find it hard to be patient with any process that is not critical, or to agree with any principle or method that professes to be constructive. Construction, indeed, without criticism is sure to be invalid; but the criticism which does not either end in construction or make it more possible, is quite as surely without any scientific character or function. Hence, though modern criticism, philosophical, literary, and historical, has made systematic treatises of the old order impossible, it has only made a new endeavour at construction the more necessary. This book does not profess or claim to be a system of theology, but it is an attempt at formulating the fundamental or material conception of such a system; or, in other words, it is an endeavour through a Christian doctrine of God at a sketch of the first lines of a Christian Theology. While in no sense an official publication, but entirely inde pendent and personal in its statements and conclusions, it will be found to represent fairly the view - point of the Mo ravian Church or Unitas F ratrum, -as to the leading features of Christian Doctrine and Systematic Theology. Some persons may think it ill advised to publish such a work at this time of theological unrest and of apparently sharp contrasts between traditional and modern theology. The work, as will be evident to every reader, is written from within the movement and in confessed sympathy with it. On the other hand, the writer has earnestly tried to tell the truth. As far as possible, the words ofthe original authors have been made to speak for themselves. The writer has interpreted his duty 33 narration, not praise or blame. He gladly acknowledges the excellent work done by Dr. W. E. Garrison, "Alexander Campbell's Theology"; by Dr. Errett Gates, "The Early Relation and Separation of the Disciples and Baptists," and the "History of the Disciples"; also the service done by C. A. Young, in the publication of "Historic Documents Illustrating Christian Union"; but his own researches have been independent of these and for the most part prior in time.
