Book Description
Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 45: Spring, 1952 Yes, but all that was yesterday! It would still be fresh in memory, and because of what had happened you would never be quite the same again. But what about today and tomorrow? Where do we go from here? What do we do the day after the Day of Pente cost? We know what the disciples did. They continued stedfastly in the apos tles' doctrine, and fellowship, and in breaking. Of bread, and in prayers. Book Description
Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 1992, Vol. 13 The response to having such a record of the year's events was so positive that the next Bulletin, published in May 1908, was described as a quarterly publication of the Trustees of the Seminary. As the task of keeping in touch with graduates grew, the size of the Bulletin also increased. A book review section was added in 1941. Book Description
Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 1993, Vol. 14 Thank you, Mr. President, for your introduction and your welcoming words. I would like to add my own warm welcome to everyone who is here today from our Seminary community, and also to colleagues and dear friends from Princeton University, the Center of Theological Inquiry, and the Institute for Advanced Studies. It was exactly two years ago this month that Dr. Gillespie called me on a warm, humid February evening in Port Elizabeth, South Africa with the news that the Board of Trustees had appointed me to be the first occupant of the recently established James I. Mccord Chair in Theology and Science at this seminary. That single telephone call irrevocably changed our lives, and also the lives of our children and family. Today Hester, Nina, and I can look back on our first year in the United States and in Princeton. In spite of an often difficult and even painful transition, we have been overwhelmed by the warm way in which we were welcomed to this community. We are deeply appreciative of this, and also for your faith in, and your remarkable vision of the way that theology and the sciences today move on the cutting edge of the Christian dialogue with our contemporary culture. Book Description
Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 1986, Vol. 7 In summary, then, and in very broad outline, my argument so far has been that Afrikaners during the first two centuries of settlement in southern Africa were, on the whole, Calvinists only in name, had no sense ofa manifest destiny, but were, by and large, unsophisticated folk who reacted to the challenges of their context in an ad hoc manner and by means of a very literalist interpretation of the Bible. Book Description
Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 1988, Vol. 9 Most of you graduates have come to the end of your academic preparation for ministry. It is for many of you the beginning of your ministry. All that you have prepared to do, all that you have dreamed of being, as a minister awaits you now. I have thought for some weeks about what I would share with you. I come with no Special expertise. I have no heretofore unrevealed truth to impart. I do offer you today something authentic. I offer to you the vantage point of twenty-seven years as a parish minister. Seventeen years of the twenty-seven I have served as pastor of the Peachtree Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Georgia. I am fifty-three years old, and I have now spent more than half my life as a minister. I come not only with an authentic experience of ministry, I also come with a bias - a bias of joy. I have joyfully lived among, dealt with, responded to, the people that God has committed to my care. I have loved it. I loved it when I began and I love it today. My love for my work has grown with the passing of the years. I affirm today that as far as the ministry is concerned, I still hear the trumpets in the morning. Since, by his grace, God is not through with me yet, and he is just getting started with many of you, this is in response to your kind invitation, my interim report to you from the field. Book Description
Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 1999, Vol. 20 No doubt that explains why our media pundits have avoided the topic and rushed off in other directions to account for this tragedy. I forget who said it when, and on What channel, but there was one woman interviewed who told the interviewer something like this: You won't be able to handle this, but the Columbine massacre is an instance of evil.
