The Propagandists' Playbook

The Propagandists' Playbook PDF Author: Francesca Bolla Tripodi
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300248946
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
The Propagandists' Playbook peels back the layers of the right-wing media manipulation machine to reveal why its strategies are pervasive, while humanizing the people whose worldviews and media practices conservatism embodies. Based on interviews and ethnographic observations of two Republican groups over the course of the 2017 Virginia gubernatorial race--including the author's firsthand experience of the 2017 Unite the Right rally--the book considers how Google algorithms, YouTube playlists, pundits, and politicians can manipulate search, reaffirm beliefs, and expose audiences to extremist ideas, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. Tripodi argues that conservatives who embody the Christian worldview give authoritative weight to original texts and interrogate the media using the same tools taught to them in Bible study--for example, using Google to "fact check" the news. The result of this practice, tied to conservative marketing tactics, is a radicalization of content and a changing of narratives adopted by the media.

Book Description
An examination of what algorithmic polarization means for society and how conservative elites use media literacy tactics to spread propaganda The Propagandists’ Playbook peels back the layers of the right-wing media manipulation machine to reveal why its strategies are so effective and pervasive, while also humanizing the people whose worldviews and media practices conservatism embodies. Based on interviews and ethnographic observations of two Republican groups over the course of the 2018 Virginia gubernatorial race—including the author’s firsthand experience of the 2017 Unite the Right rally—the book considers how Google algorithms, YouTube playlists, pundits, and politicians can manipulate audiences, reaffirm beliefs, and expose audiences to more extremist ideas, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. Francesca Tripodi argues that conservatives who embody the Christian worldview give authoritative weight to original texts and interrogate the media using the same tools taught to them in Bible study—for example, using Google to “fact check” the news. The result of this practice, tied to conservative marketing tactics, is more than a reaffirmation of existing beliefs: it is a radicalization of content and a changing of narratives adopted by the media. Tripodi also demonstrates the pervasiveness of white supremacy in the conservative media ecosystem, as well as its mainstream appeal, scope, and spread.

Propaganda Techniques

Propaganda Techniques PDF Author: Henry T. Conserva
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1410704963
Category : Communication
Languages : en
Pages : 124

Book Description
Propaganda Techniques is a book designed to illustrate several of the many ways politicians, advertising writers and countless promoters try to control our thoughts. The readers of this book will become more aware of the countless and subtle ways in which they are being manipulated every day. Although initially this book was intended for use by teachers and students, I soon realized it would be useful for people in many other fields. Journalists, business people, sales people, police, counselors, advertisers, politicians, medical personnel and lawyers are just a few of the groups that would find this book useful. General readers would also find it stimulating and provocative. The eighty-nine selected techniques explained in the book are divided into seven sections; Faulty Logic Diversion and Evasion Appealing to the Emotions Using Falsehoods and Trickery Playing on Human Behavioral Tendencies, Mental Capacities and Processes Speaking or Writing Styles Reason or Common Sense The exercises at the end of the book will help the reader gain practice in using the propaganda techniques. The first exercise is for simplification of a persuasive message. A complex message loses effectiveness because most people lack the stamina to wade through a great deal of information to get to the point. The exercise for simplification calls for writing a summary of the Declaration of Independence so that the document will be reduced to a few paragraphs while maintaining the perceived intent of the author. This work should be very useful to all those trying to develop critical thinking skills.

Lattice of Lies

Lattice of Lies PDF Author: Nicholas Rentas
Publisher: Rentastic Media
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 170

Book Description
Expanding on the works of Jacques Ellul, Noam Chomsky, Upton Sinclair, and many others, Lattice of Lies investigates a power structure that controls through a divided media system of propaganda. Due to an onslaught of disinformation, there is an urgent need for media literacy. By taking a closer look at the media model and history of propaganda, the reader will have a deeper understanding of the forces that desire to divide and indoctrinate the American people. By exploring narrative construction, the reader can better decode the deceptions and counter the political playbook. While Machiavelli aided the prince in his quest for power, Lattice of Lies serves the people in their defense against tyranny. Other highlights: -The suppression of information has allowed an imperialistic and rogue military to operate unchecked. -Divide and Rule: How political leaders strategize to divide the populace, so that the people cannot challenge the power structure. -Behind the illusion of pluralistic power lies a plutocracy that relies on propaganda to deter populist takeover. -The divided media model ensures that different facts and narratives produce two warring factions. -How the power structure co-opted the rise of populism by providing fake populists to take their place. -Examining the powerless masses and their inability to cope with pollution, inflation, endless war, and inequality. -Providing a vision for how the people can cross the bridge toward a sustainable and humane future.

Lefty's Playbook

Lefty's Playbook PDF Author: JW
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1449702392
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 145

Book Description
Todays world is no more inoculated from dangerous political ideologies than it was in the past: while former communist countries have become full fledged democracies, some flagship democracies have been slowly gravitating towards leftist ideals. Lefty's Playbook asserts that this leftward gravitation is no accident, but a well choreographed plan. Lefty's Playbook lays out this plan in a format written to reach all levels of political education: as a primer for those who are unaware, as a confirmation for those who are suspect, and as a reminder for those who understand what lies behind the veil of leftist ideology.
