The Theory of Evolution in the Light of Facts PDF Author: Karl Frank
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330289419

Pages : 259

Book Description
Excerpt from The Theory of Evolution in the Light of Facts The object of the present work is to throw some light on the theory of Descent. Among many of the students of nature of the present day we perceive that greater and greater contradictions arise between the actual results of their technical work and that which they put forward as 'postulates' of the theory of Evolution. Our object is to deal with this. The 'certain' or the 'probable' should be separated from the pure 'postulates' and the actual area of elucidation of the hypotheses of Evolution be thereby clearly defined. The chief postulate, the origin and development of the animals from the plants, is dealt with fully. If the area of elucidation he exactly defined, then, and then only, can it be a question of a truly scientific attempt at explanation. The best known systems, those of Darwin and of Lamarck, are tested by their premisses and method; but only their specific doctrines are taken into consideration. In the formation of a reliable hypothesis it was less important to present a complete collection of all observations than to show clearly, by separate examples, the demonstrative force and extent of the argument concerned. The Theory of Evolution in the Light of Facts

The Theory of Evolution in the Light of Facts PDF Author: Charles T. Druery
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780367273316
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Originally published in 1913, The Theory of Evolution in the Light of Facts examines the theory of Descent; the book is a time capsule of information, providing a record of the explorations into Darwinian theory during the first half of the 20th century. The book examines the contradictions which arose between technical work of the period and the assumptions surrounding the theory of evolution. The book aims to address that which is considered 'certain' or 'probable' from postulation in order to explain and clearly define the theory of evolution. It does this through hypothesising on the development of animals and plants using the systems of Darwin and Lamarck. This book will be of interest to anthropologists and historians of natural science alike.

Book Description
The Arthur M. Sackler Colloquia of the National Academy of Sciences address scientific topics of broad and current interest, cutting across the boundaries of traditional disciplines. Each year, four or five such colloquia are scheduled, typically two days in length and international in scope. Colloquia are organized by a member of the Academy, often with the assistance of an organizing committee, and feature presentations by leading scientists in the field and discussions with a hundred or more researchers with an interest in the topic. Colloquia presentations are recorded and posted on the National Academy of Sciences Sackler colloquia website and published on CD-ROM. These Colloquia are made possible by a generous gift from Mrs. Jill Sackler, in memory of her husband, Arthur M. Sackler.

Origins of Darwin's Evolution

Origins of Darwin's Evolution PDF Author: J. David Archibald
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231545290
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Historical biogeography—the study of the history of species through both time and place—first convinced Charles Darwin of evolution. This field was so important to Darwin’s initial theories and line of thinking that he said as much in the very first paragraph of On the Origin of Species (1859) and later in his autobiography. His methods included collecting mammalian fossils in South America clearly related to living forms, tracing the geographical distributions of living species across South America, and sampling peculiar fauna of the geologically young Galápagos Archipelago that showed evident affinities to South American forms. Over the years, Darwin collected other evidence in support of evolution, but his historical biogeographical arguments remained paramount, so much so that he devotes three full chapters to this topic in On the Origin of Species. Discussions of Darwin’s landmark book too often give scant attention to this wealth of evidence, and we still do not fully appreciate its significance in Darwin’s thinking. In Origins of Darwin’s Evolution, J. David Archibald explores this lapse, showing how Darwin first came to the conclusion that, instead of various centers of creation, species had evolved in different regions throughout the world. He also shows that Darwin’s other early passion—geology—proved a more elusive corroboration of evolution. On the Origin of Species has only one chapter dedicated to the rock and fossil record, as it then appeared too incomplete for Darwin’s evidentiary standards. Carefully retracing Darwin’s gathering of evidence and the evolution of his thinking, Origins of Darwin’s Evolution achieves a new understanding of how Darwin crafted his transformative theory.
