Book Description
While the Dinsmores, Travillas, and Raymonds spend the summer in Nantucket, Lester and Elsie Leland are called to the bedside of Lester's dying brother. His only child, Evelyn, is left in their care. Upon the Lelands' return to Ion from Nantucket, Elsie's dear old mammy, Aunt Chloe, passes away. Lulu and Evelyn become close friends, and the four families decide to spend the Christmas holidays and winter at Viamede. All the children are enrolled in Oakdale Academy as day students. Lulu, however, gets into trouble when she strikes her teacher with a book, and her stubborn refusal to submit to Mr. Dinsmore's authority is eclipsed only by the news that her father is lost at sea.

Book Description
Amid crashing thunder, roaring winds, pounding rain, and the creaking of the steamer as it struggled forward in the rolling sea, the passengers could hear the occasional shouted order from the officers. The steamer was tossed from side to side. 'Are we in danger of striking the rocks, Papa?' Elsie asked her father. 'I think not, ' he replied. At that instant, a terrible cracking sound assaulted their ears. The whole boat shuddered, and a man's panicked voice rose high above the screams and cries---'We've struck ground! We'll all be drowned!' As the storms of life continue to break around Elsie Dinsmore Travilla and her family, there are terrible tragedies to endure and times of joy as well. The Travilla children are growing up and facing life-altering decisions. Others in the Dinsmore family must confront dramatic upheavals in their lives. As the United States approaches the celebration of its first century as a nation, will Elsie and her family have their own causes to celebrate? How will adversity affect Elsie's world and the hopes of those she loves so dearly? Elsie's Great Hope again takes readers into the exciting story of a family grounded in Christian love and faith. Adapted from the influential nineteenth century novels by Miss Martha Finley, this eighth book in the series offers modern readers a wealth of hope and wisdom that is as meaningful today as it was over a hundred years ago. Elsie's Great Hope is packed with new adventures and fascinating characters that promise to intrigue and inspire readers of every age.

Book Description
Martha Finley (April 26, 1828 - January 30, 1909) was a teacher and author of numerous works, the most well known being the 28 volume Elsie Dinsmore series which was published over a span of 38 years. The daughter of Presbyterian minister Dr. James Brown Finley and his wife and cousin Maria Theresa Brown Finley, she was born on April 26, 1828, in Chillicothe, Ohio. Finley wrote many of her books under the pseudonym Martha Farquharson. She died in 1909 in Elkton, Maryland, where she moved in 1876.Elsie does not live with her parents but with her paternal grandfather, his second wife (Elsie's step-grandmother), and their six children: Adelaide, Lora, Louise, Arthur, Walter, and Enna (Enna was the youngest). Elsie's mother died soon after giving birth to her, leaving her in the care of her grandfather. Before her father comes back she becomes good friends with Rose Allison, with whom she studies the Bible. Her father was in Europe until she was almost eight years old as the first book begins. The first Elsie books deal with a constant moral conflict between Christian principles and familial loyalty. Deeper still is the warring between Christ centered principles and the "worldly" inclinations of both her Father and his family. Elsie's father is a strict disciplinarian who dictates inflexible rules by which his daughter must live. Any infraction is severely and often unjustly punished. In her father's absence Elsie has become a Christian and abides by what she has been taught is Biblical law, especially the Ten Commandments (also known as the Decalogue)- as taught to her by her dead Mother's housekeeper and then her own Nanny,
