Among other poets represented are Wyatt, Donne, Marston and Jonson and a number of pieces have been included by writers whose work is today not readily accessible, such as Gascoigne, Lodge, Rowlands and Guilpin. The nature and development of verse satire as a literary genre is discussed in the introduction.

Does satire have the ability to effect social reform? If so, what satiric style is most effective in bringing about reform? This book explores how Renaissance poet and playwright Ben Jonson negotiated contemporary pressures to forge a satiric persona and style uniquely his own. These pressures were especially intense while Jonson was engaged in the Poetomachia, or Poets’ War (1598-1601), which pitted him against rival writers John Marston and Thomas Dekker. As a struggle between satiric styles, this conflict poses compelling questions about the nature and potential of satire during the Renaissance. In particular, this book explores how Jonson forged a moderate Horatian satiric style he championed as capable of effective social reform. As part of his distinctive model, Jonson turned to the metaphor of purging, in opposition to the metaphors of stinging, barking, biting, and whipping employed by his Juvenalian rivals. The influence of the Roman poet Horace on Ben Jonson has often been acknowledged, but never fully explored. Discussing Jonson's Horatianism in detail, this study also places Jonson's densely intertextual relationship with Horace's Latin text within the broader context of his complex negotiations with a range of other 'rivals' to the Horatian model including Pindar, Seneca, Juvenal and Martial. For the courtiers of King Henry VIII, the writing of verse was a sign of a ready wit and social gracefulness. But their verse could also give coded expression to desires and resentments produced by competition amongst an elite for the favour of an increasingly tyrannical king. This study focuses primarily on the work of the two most successful courtier poets, Sir Thomas Wyatt (c.1503-1542) and Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (1517-1547). Although Surrey admired and imitated Wyatt, each represents a significantly different element in the Henrician court. Wyatt was a 'new man', rising in the service of the King, while Surrey was a member of the old peerage, jealous of the erosion of traditional powers and privileges.
