Book Description
Includes the First World War Illustrations Pack – 73 battle plans and diagrams and 198 photos “Reminiscences of a TA officer of the 1st Hertfordshire who served 22 months in France as company and battalion commander and finally brigade commander. When war broke out the author, a TA major, was commanding C Company of the 1st Battalion the Hertfordshire Regiment, a TA regiment. In January 1915 he succeeded to command of the battalion and in February 1916 he was appointed commander of the 68th Brigade, a position he held for the next six months, one of the few TA officers to have command of a brigade. So this story is of one who saw active service on the Western Front as a company, battalion and brigade commander in the space of twenty-two months. He was also MP for Christchurch from 1910 to 1918 and Bournemouth from 1918 to 1940 in which year he was created Baron of Bournemouth. The battalion landed in France on 6 November 1914 and a fortnight later joined the 4th Guards Brigade in 2nd Division and stayed with it till the Guards Division was formed in August 1915, when it was transferred to the 6th Brigade, still in 2nd Division. The time spent with the Guards Brigade had rubbed off on the battalion — the author refers to them as the ‘Herts Guards’, perhaps with a touch of self-importance. There was plenty of action during this first year described in a series of short chapters, culminating in Croft’s last action as a CO, the Battle of Loos; four months later he took over 68th Brigade in 23rd Division and the second part of the book is an account of this command.”-Print ed.

Transforming Under Fire: the Atlanta Campaign of 1864 [Illustrated Edition]

Transforming Under Fire: the Atlanta Campaign of 1864 [Illustrated Edition] PDF Author: Mark G. Elam
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1782893954
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack - 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. Many historians give William Sherman total credit for the success of the Atlanta Campaign, when in fact it was the success of the Federal team as an institution. Conversely, many blame Joseph Johnston for the Confederate loss in that campaign, when in fact he was only one cog in the Confederate war machine. It was beyond Johnston ‘s ability to adapt if President Jefferson Davis and the rest of the Confederate team failed in fulfilling their duties. More importantly, the Federal team adapted during the middle of the war. In short they were able to transform the way they fought the war. The Confederates in the west were never able to do the same.

The Stars Bear Witness [Illustrated Edition]

The Stars Bear Witness [Illustrated Edition] PDF Author: Bernard Goldstein
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1786254751
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
Includes 204 photos, plans and maps illustrating The Holocaust “Born in a small town outside of Warsaw in 1889, Bernard Goldstein joined the Jewish labor organization, the Bund, at age 16 and dedicated his life to organizing workers and resisting tyranny. Goldstein spent time in prisons from Warsaw to Siberia, took part in the Russian Revolution and was a respected organizer within the vibrant labor movement in independent Poland. “In 1939, with the Nazi invasion of Poland and establishment of the Jewish Ghetto, Goldstein and the Bund went underground—organizing housing, food and clothing within the ghetto; communicating with the West for support; and developing a secret armed force. Smuggled out of the ghetto just before the Jewish militia’s heroic last stand, Goldstein assisted in procuring guns to aid those within the ghetto’s walls and aided in the fight to free Warsaw. After the liberation of Poland, Goldstein emigrated to America, where he penned this account of his five-and-a-half years within the Warsaw ghetto and his brave comrades who resisted to the end. His surprisingly modest and frank depiction of a community under siege at a time when the world chose not to intervene is enlightening, devastating and ultimately inspiring.”-Print ed. “His active leadership before the war and his position in the Jewish underground during it qualify him as the chronicler of the last hours of Warsaw’s Jews. Out of the tortured memories of those five-and-a-half years, he has brought forth the picture with all its shadings—the good with the bad, the cowardly with the heroic, the disgraceful with the glorious. This is his valedictory, his final service to the Jews of Warsaw.”—Leonard Shatzkin

Fueling the Fires of Resistance — Army Air Forces Special Operations in the Balkans during World War II [Illustrated Edition]

Fueling the Fires of Resistance — Army Air Forces Special Operations in the Balkans during World War II [Illustrated Edition] PDF Author: William M. Leary
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1786252406
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 36

Book Description
Includes 14 illustrations Of all the Army Air Forces’ many operations in the Second World War, none was more demanding or important than those supporting the activity of resistance groups fighting the Axis powers. The special operations supporting the Yugoslavian partisans fighting the forces of Nazism in the Balkans required particular dedication and expertise. Balkan flying conditions demanded the best of flying skills, and the tenacious German defenses in that troubled region complicated this challenge even further. In this study, Professor William Leary examines what might fairly be considered one of the most important early experiences in the history of Air Force special operations. It is ironic that, fifty years after these activities, the Air Force today is heavily involved in Balkan operations, including night air drops of supplies. But this time, the supplies are for humanitarian relief, not war. The airlifters committed to relieving misery in that part of the world follow in the wake of their predecessors who, fifty years ago, flew the night skies with courage and skill to help bring an end to Nazi tyranny.
