History of Socialism in the United States (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Morris Hillquit

Category : History

Book Description
Excerpt from History of Socialism in the United States Since the first appearance of this book (October, 1903), four editions of it have been printed without any change in the text. But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. An attempt has also been made in this edition to analyze the character of the American socialist movement and to forecast its probable future. When the "History of Socialism in the United States" was first written, socialism was only beginning to gain a foothold in this country, and the organized socialist movement was barely in its formative stage. The Socialist Party, which, to-day represents the bulk of all organized socialist activities in the United States, was only two years old. Its following was small, and its policy was somewhat unsettled. During the last six years, the party has almost doubled the number of its voters and trebled its enrolled membership. It has largely extended and perfected its organization, and has evolved more fixt and efficient methods of action. Since its organization in 1901, the Socialist Party has held three conventions and has passed through two national political campaigns. Its mission and place in the politics of the country have become more definitely settled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Horace Greeley and Other Pioneers of American Socialism (Classic Reprint)

Horace Greeley and Other Pioneers of American Socialism (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Charles Southeran
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330818268
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 378

Book Description
Excerpt from Horace Greeley and Other Pioneers of American Socialism This volume - Horace Greeley and other Pioneers of American Socialism - is neither biographical nor scientific, in the full sense of those words. Yet it partakes of both characters, albeit a sociological olla podrida with a modicum of seasoning a la doctrinaire. It has been written, however, with distinctly positive objects in mental view. During the many years that I have been a Constitutional State Socialist I have found myself confronted with two serious obstacles blocking the path of my attempts to arouse my fellow American citizens from their political and economic lethargy. One of these hindrances has been willful literary misrepresentation and the other, woful ignorance of Social Science. The latter has been too frequently a result of the former. Strange as it may seem to minds of culture, the great majority of people in the United States still believe that Socialism and Anarchism are one and the same thing, never dreaming that there is a sharp distinction, if not an actual antagonism, - both theoretical and practical, - between the two. Book Description
Excerpt from Socialism as an Incubus on the American Labor Movement In 1900, at Louisville, Max Hayes was early on hand with Resolution No. 4, an amendment to the American Federation of Labor Constitution, calling for a class-conscious political labor party, thus combining the industrial and political power of the working class with a view of abolishing the wage system. This he withdrew. Four other Socialist resolutions were introduced, Nos. 100, 114, 215, and 219, one of them by Delegate Hayes. They took up time on the sixth and seventh days of the convention. The Committee on Resolutions reported on them adversely: It is not within the constitutional or any other power of the Amer ican Federation of Labor to legislate, resolve or specify to which political party members of our unions shall belong or for what party they shall vote. 'on a vote of to 685 the committee's substitute was adopted. Mr. Gompers was re - elected unanimously. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
