Śiva's Saints
Author: Gil Ben-Herut
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190878843
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 297
Book Description
"This book takes a pioneering approach to understanding the origins of the Vīrasaiva / Lingāyata tradition by considering for the first time in English-language scholarship a major collection of hagiographies about the twelfth-century devotees, which was produced very soon after their purported activities. The tradition, which developed over the last eight centuries in the Kannada-speaking region of the Deccan plateau in India, holds a unique place in Hindu society. Its members do not adhere to the hierarchical structures of Brahminical-centered society, and they practice a distinct set of rituals, such as carrying a personal linga (an emblem of the Hindu god Siva) on their body and worshiping it individually (as well as in groups), burying and not cremating their dead, and more"--

From Stigma to Assertion
Author: Mikael Aktor
Publisher: Museum Tusculanum Press
ISBN: 8763507757
Category : Caste
Languages : en
Pages : 234
Book Description
Untouchability was historically a set of discriminative practices that bound the lowest castes to low-status jobs and restricted their social mobility. Formally the practice was abolished with the constitution of independent India. In order to compensate for the social and economic setback caused by centuries? discrimination a reservation policy that guaranteed the former untouchables access to education and jobs was introduced. These measures have changed the life conditions of the targeted groups, but they have also created tensions in a society where many other groups experience economic stress. The essays in this book engage in critical discussions of the Hindu caste system and put the colonial and post-colonial notion of Untouchability in a wider temporal perspective, covering pre-colonial textual material as well as present-day debates over Dalit rights and identity. Contributors: Mikael Aktor, Simon Charsley, Jocelyn Clarke, Robert Deliège Kathinka Frøystad, Marie-Caroline Saglio-Yatzimirsky, Andrew Wyatt, Eleanor Zelliot.

Subaltern Saints in India
Author: Meenakshi Jha
Publisher: Motilal Banarsidass
ISBN: 8120842995
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 265
Book Description
The present era of complexity, anxiety and moral turpitude is in need of spiritual solace and God's grace more than ever before. The established frameworks of religion have not entirely been successful in streamlining the rapport between the maker and the creation. The emergence and progression of bhakti saints is a significant power in this direction. Living exemplary, realised lives on their own terms mostly in opposition to the given frame of life, the bhakti saints heralded a new possibility of the egalitarian order without any bigotry or dogmatism. The book undertakes a probe into the specific contributions made by two hitherto neglected sections of the Indian society, namely women and Sudras. The precepts and lives of these subaltern saints reiterate the possibility of personal salvation and social regeneration, having transformative potential for breaking the barriers of iniquitous, hierarchical structures.

An Untouchable Community in South India
Author: Michael Moffatt
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400870364
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 369
Book Description
While many studies suggest that Indian Untouchables do not entirely share the hierarchical values characteristic of the caste system, Michael Moffatt argues that the most striking feature of the lowest castes is their pervasive cultural consensus with those higher in the system. Though rural Untouchables question their particular position in the system, they seldom question the system as a whole, and they maintain among themselves a set of hierarchical conceptions and institutions virtually identical to those of the dominant social order. Based on fourteen months of fieldwork with Untouchable castes in two villages in Tamil Nadu, south India, Professor Moffatt's analysis specifies ways in which the Untouchables are both excluded and included by the higher castes. Ethnographically, he pursues his structural analysis in two related domains: Untouchable social structure, and Untouchable religious belief and practice. The author finds that in those aspects of their lives where Untouchables are excluded from larger village life, they replicate in their own community nearly every institution, role, and ranked relation from which they have been excluded. Where the Untouchables are included by the higher castes, they complete the hierarchical whole by accepting their low position and playing their assigned roles. Thus the most oppressed members of Indian society are often among the truest believers in the system. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
