From the Introduction: A long time ago when this project was first dreamed up, we decided on a pack produced by men, about men, which would support the excellent work which women are doing around gender and development issues globally, by educating men around those same issues as part of a movement of positive change for both men and women. Although this is a development education resource it is by its nature also an anti-sexist resource. But hopefully it has a strong international perspective, and suggests many other sources for introducing these aspects. It is important though to tackle the problem of discrimination processes in our own culture and society, because it is these same structures which are being imposed on the south ('Third World') through so-called development. For face-to-face youth workers the problem of boys hogging the pool table is going to be more immediate, and probably needs addressing before any mention of wider discrimination nationally, or the global disempowerment of women is made. It is for this reason that the poster which accompany and hopefully provide a good introduction to this pack, contain no images of women. Young men need to be encouraged to realize that they have many issues of their own which need to be dealt with, before they will hopefully move on to address the concerns of women in a more constructive and positive way. The posters and accompanying activities provide an initial push for addressing issues which are central to the lives of young men, within the framework of a wider, more global context and in a way which is appropriate to the less formal environment of a youth club. This pack is meant as a starting point; a bridge between traditional anti-sexist work with boys and gender and development work, and there are many other useful resources suggested which if mixed and matched and used thoughtfully will make significant inroads into the two issues. There are also suggested resources on other issues, partly because you cannot look at any issue in isolation and partly because focusing on an issue which is slightly removed from the group can often be more motivating, create better group coherence, and can indirectly create an opening to discuss issues of sexism, whether in their own lives, nationally, or even globally. It is such a vast issue with so many facets. But what seems clear is the need for men to take responsibility for what happens in their own lives, and in the lives of others. Ultimately, the world will not change until men do. Men globally have already been forced to make concessions, but surely it has to be better if men begin to take up the challenge themselves, and take action for positive change. This central theme runs through the poster set and the accompanying resource pack.
