Book Description
This pamphlet was prepared by Dr. Waldemar Erfurth at the EUCOM Historical Division Interrogation Inclosure, Neustadt, Germany, late in 1947. Dr. Erfurth represented the German Armed Forces High Command at Finnish Headquarters from June 1941 until the Finnish surrender in September 1944. He attained the rank of lieutenant general (General der Infanterie) in the German Army, and was a United States prisoner of war when this study was written. Like all publications in the GERMAN REPORT SERIES, this is a translation from the German and presents the views of the German author without interpretation by American personnel. Throughout this pamphlet, Finnish and Russian combat methods, organization, and equipment are compared to those of the German Army. The descriptions of Finnish climate and terrain involve comparisons with that of Germany. In the preparation of this revised edition, the German text has been retranslated, and certain changes in typography and chapter titles have been made to improve clarity and facilitate its use. The author's views, whatever they may be, find the same expression in the following translation as they do in the original German. Those interested in a detailed history of the war in Finland, especially its political and diplomatic aspects, are referred to Dr. Erfurth's book Der Finnische Krieg 1941-1944 (Wiesbaden, 1950). No English translation is available at this time.

Luftwaffe Fighters and Fighter-bombers Over the Far North

Luftwaffe Fighters and Fighter-bombers Over the Far North PDF Author: Andreas Brekken
Publisher: Classic Publications
ISBN: 9781903223901
Category : Airplanes, Military
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This is a reprint of the final volume of the acclaimed 'Jagdwaffe' series. This title was first published only last year. The 'Jagdwaffe' series represents one of the most comprehensive pictorial accounts of the air war in Europe between 1939 and 1945 from the standpoint of the Luftwaffe, its aircraft and its crew. Each volume incorporates more than 200 rare images, many previously unpublished, alongside specially commissioned colour artwork, detailed narrative and personal reminiscences. As such, the books provide a unique insight into the men and equipment of the Luftwaffe during this period. This final volume in the series covers the final phase of World War 2 in Europe, with the German forces on the retreat in Italy and on both the Western and Eastern fronts. For the Luftwaffe, increasingly short of serviceable aircraft and more importantly trained pilots to fly them, it was a period when supremacy over the sky was ceded to the victorious Allies.Although the recently-introduced jet aircraft promised a great deal in terms of performance against more traditional aircraft types, production was limited and their arrival was too late to swing the tide of war in Germany's favour. With the might of the Allied bombing fleets appearing regularly over the skies of Germany and with raw materials, in particular aviation, fuel, increasingly scarce, the last months of the war represented a struggle for the aircrew, where few expected to survive.

The New Battle for the Atlantic

The New Battle for the Atlantic PDF Author: Magnus F Nordenman
Publisher: Naval Institute Press
ISBN: 1682472841
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
In this book, Magnus Nordenman explores the emerging competition between the United States and its NATO allies and the resurgent Russian navy in the North Atlantic. This maritime region played a key role in the two world wars and the Cold War, serving as the strategic link between the United States and Europe that enabled the flow of reinforcements and supplies to the European Allies. Nordenman shows that while a conflict in Europe has never been won in the North Atlantic, it surely could have been lost there. With Vladimir Putin’s Russia threatening the peace in Europe following the annexation of Crimea in 2014, the North Atlantic and other maritime domains around Europe are once again vitally important. But this battle will in many ways be different, Nordenman demonstrates, due to an overstretched U.S. Navy, the rise of disruptive technologies, a beleaguered NATO that woke up to the Russian challenge unprepared for high-end warfighting in the maritime domain, and a Russia commanding a smaller, but more sophisticated, navy equipped with long-range cruise missiles. Nordenman also provides a set of recommendations for what the United States and NATO must do now in order to secure the North Atlantic in this new age of great power competition.
