Das letzte Werk Ernst Cassirers — The Myth of the State —, legitimiert die Hypothese, Cassirers Philosophie der Kultur enthalte eine Theorie der Politik, die er selbst erst spät zu entfalten begann. Der Text scheint darüber hinaus zu belegen, dass die in seiner »Philosophie der symbolischen Formen« entwickelte »Kritik der Kultur« auch den Rahmen für eine Theorie des Politischen absteckt und dazu nötigt, auf anthropologischer Ebene die Einheit von »animal symbolicum« und »zoon politikon« zu denken. Die Versuche, Cassirer unter dieser methodologischen Retrospektive neu zu lesen, gehen höchst unterschiedliche Wege und kommen zu unterschiedlichen Resultaten. Einige spüren das Verhältnis von Kultur und Politik in Cassirers Werk immanent im Rahmen der im engeren Sinne kulturphilosophischen Schriften auf.
