Book Description
INSTANT TOP 10 BESTSELLER • New York Times • USA Today • Washington Post • LA Times “Debunks the idea that aging inevitably brings infirmity and unhappiness and instead offers a trove of practical, evidence-based guidance for living longer and better.”—Daniel H. Pink, author of When and Drive SUCCESSFUL AGING delivers powerful insights: • Debunking the myth that memory always declines with age • Confirming that "health span"—not "life span"—is what matters • Proving that sixty-plus years is a unique and newly recognized developmental stage • Recommending that people look forward to joy, as reminiscing doesn't promote health Levitin looks at the science behind what we all can learn from those who age joyously, as well as how to adapt our culture to take full advantage of older people's wisdom and experience. Throughout his exploration of what aging really means, using research from developmental neuroscience and the psychology of individual differences, Levitin reveals resilience strategies and practical, cognitive enhancing tricks everyone should do as they age. Successful Aging inspires a powerful new approach to how readers think about our final decades, and it will revolutionize the way we plan for old age as individuals, family members, and citizens within a society where the average life expectancy continues to rise.

Successful Aging

Successful Aging PDF Author: Martin Bloom
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461559316
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 219

Book Description
There is a near-universal folk saying that everyone wishes to live a good long life, but no one wishes for old age. More contemporarily, the rock and roll band, Little Feat, sang, "You know that you're over the hill when your mind's making promises your body can't fill. " This book is about the good long life. It is a book about primary prevention strategies in the aging process; it is not about preventing that process. It is not about being old. Instead, it is about the things that individuals - and the helping professionals who provide them with counsel and assistance - can do to prevent the preventable problems of advancing age, and to better manage those changes in functioning that cannot be prevented. In short, it is about extending all our capacities to the fullest so that we can better keep all those promises that we make to ourselves and others. Aging is a life-long process. We focus here on the changes that are taking place in our selves and in our society as we age. In particular, we focus on what we can do to affect these changes by the choices we make and how we live. This book offers primary prevention strategies for mature and older adults, with the recognition that mature adulthood starts as soon as we are old enough to truly appreciate our active role in our own aging processes.

Successful Aging as a Contemporary Obsession

Successful Aging as a Contemporary Obsession PDF Author: Sarah Lamb
Publisher: Rutgers University Press
ISBN: 0813585368
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
In recent decades, the North American public has pursued an inspirational vision of successful aging—striving through medical technique and individual effort to eradicate the declines, vulnerabilities, and dependencies previously commonly associated with old age. On the face of it, this bold new vision of successful, healthy, and active aging is highly appealing. But it also rests on a deep cultural discomfort with aging and being old. The contributors to Successful Aging as a Contemporary Obsession explore how the successful aging movement is playing out across five continents. Their chapters investigate a variety of people, including Catholic nuns in the United States; Hindu ashram dwellers; older American women seeking plastic surgery; aging African-American lesbians and gay men in the District of Columbia; Chicago home health care workers and their aging clients; Mexican men foregoing Viagra; dementia and Alzheimer sufferers in the United States and Brazil; and aging policies in Denmark, Poland, India, China, Japan, and Uganda. This book offers a fresh look at a major cultural and public health movement of our time, questioning what has become for many a taken-for-granted goal—aging in a way that almost denies aging itself.

To ensure that physical environments meet the changing needs of older adults, a reconception of housing, communities, and neighborhoods is required." "Drawing from the fields of gerontology, health sciences, community planning, landscape architecture, and environmental design, this groundbreaking resource provides an in-depth examination of current elder housing practices and strategies, alongside goals for the future. Housing models, such as continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs), shared housing, and co-housing, are evaluated, and best practice recommendations are presented." Balancing ACT

Balancing ACT PDF Author: Sandra Conant Strachan

Languages : en
Pages : 134

Book Description
Balancing Act: Strategies for Successful Aging is written for the old, older, and oldest among us, as well as for the families and friends who are caring for them. To grow old is one experience and to care for an aging loved one is yet another, each with its own challenges and opportunities. As an older woman and a daughter whose mother died at 99, I speak with both voices and borrow freely from the poetry and wisdom of many others who are addressing the same issues. I want to offer hope, ideas, and encouragement to everyone in both of those groups. Successful aging is a dynamic, difficult journey, but rich and rewarding when done well. The photo on the cover is my favorite painting from a 2006 series I called "Windows to the Soul." I love this old woman's eyes, still twinkling and alive with anticipation, unfazed by her wrinkles. I love the peace she manifests in her personal balancing act. This is who I want to be as I age, and also what I hope for others.
