Book Description
As the second-largest city in New England, Worcester is well known for its contributions to manufacturing and transportation. However, many other people and events contributed to the building of this city. Timothy Bigelow led a revolution to take back Worcester from British rule almost two years before the Declaration of Independence. Abby Kelley Foster helped establish the first national women's rights convention in Worcester and was a leading voice against slavery. The city was also home to one of the nation's first professional baseball teams, the Worcester Brown Stockings. Miracle Man of the Western Front

Miracle Man of the Western Front PDF Author: Hagop Martin Deranian
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Armenian Americans
Languages : en
Pages : 254

Book Description
In the intense fighting that marked World War I in Europe, an Armenian-American volunteer dentist quickly became known for his skill in treating the disfiguring facial injuries suffered by large numbers of British soldiers. Working originally under primitive conditions in makeshift hospitals near the battlefields of France, Varaztad H. Kazanjian exhibited a humane concern combined with innovative medical procedures that established his reputation and marked his subsequent career as a founder of the modern practice of plastic surgery. In recognition of his war service, Dr. Kazanjian became known as "the miracle man of the Western Front" and was invested by England's King George V in the most distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George. Other honors followed as Dr. Kazanjian returned to the United States, where he continued his education and went on to a brilliant career as a surgeon, teacher at Harvard, and author of scientific articles. This biography traces the many influences that contributed to the remarkable success of the young man who fled from massacres in Ottoman Armenia to the United States in 1895. From modest beginnings in Worcester, Massachusetts, Kazanjian managed to enter Harvard Dental School. He went on to serve in World War I, earn a medical degree, and make remarkable advances in plastic surgery. He is remembered not only for his medical innovations and accomplishments, but also as a kind and modest person, "the gentle genius of plastic surgery."--Adapted from book jacket.

Worcester State Hospital

Worcester State Hospital PDF Author: Madeline Ryan and Katherine Anderson
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1467106046
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
The Worcester State Hospital offered a novel and compelling promise: that insanity could be cured by humane treatment in a therapeutic setting. Patients would enjoy its idyllic landscape, genteel interiors, wholesome food supplied from its farm, and the individualized attention of medical professionals. The hospital's reputation as a "model institution" helped to position the city of Worcester as an economic center and pioneer in social reform. Yet overcrowding, insufficient funds, and the limitations of medical knowledge undermined the institution's mission, leading to the abandonment of its original features. Despite downsizing and decay, the Worcester State Hospital continues to exert a tangible presence on the landscape. Its iconic clock tower, salvaged from demolition, stands as a reminder of its historical legacy and of the continuing role of the site--now the Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital--in the treatment of mental illness.
