Book Description
Contemporary life is leaving us frazzled, overwhelmed, and out of sorts. Our life's rhythm is often borrowed from the pace of life around us. Humans have created such a loud, fast tempo of perfection and production that we often forget--if we ever knew it at all--the rhythms designed for our well-being. In The Sacred Pulse, pastor and author April Fiet invites us to examine the frantic patterns of our lives to reclaim the deeper, sacred pulses that pattern our days. Through stories, scripture, and practical guidance for daily living, she lays out twelve rhythms--including gardening, handcrafts, friendship, and holidays--that are both sustainable and sustaining. Everyday acts like mealtime and shopping, and sporadic rhythms like the occasional snow day: reclaiming these patterns can remind us of the holy movement of God in the world. In a world of hustle and bravado, silencing the noise takes practice. The Sacred Pulse shows us how to strip away all of the competing beats we have settled for so we can tap into the joyful, holy rhythms of life.

The Guardians
Author: F. Thomas Jones
Publisher: Archway Publishing
ISBN: 166576497X
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 347
Book Description
Jones offers a combat-filled space opera that should pass muster with fans of military sci-fi à la the original Lorne Greene Battle Star Galactica rather than the new one. Several centuries in the future, a united, space-faring humanity, now known as the Guardians, confronts its deadliest nemesis in the Klingon-like Tirgonians, members of a militaristic and aggressive empire that believes humanity’s penchant for peaceful coexistence, an unbearably distasteful notion. After years of an uneasy truce, a sudden and unprovoked Tirgonian blitzkrieg across the two civilizations’ “Agreed Zone” boundary devastates the Guardians’ worlds and outposts. The remaining five hundred-plus survivors board the advanced Battleship Hope. Gandle “Hops” Hoppinzorinski, a war hero from a previous conflict, in Capt. Kirk mode has tangled with the Tirgonians before. Now, he finds himself commanding the Hope and dealing with the unexpected discovery of additional Guardian warships, but the defection of one the foremost Tirgonian combat commanders, Telebisque Teka. Tekas’s defection includes himself and the Fighting Star Palup with its entire crew. The prose offers up a large amount of square-jawed, war-room talk, wasting no time on sentimental mourning for a destroyed Earth, slain loved ones, or the impending extinction of the human race. It’s practically all action as the Guardians strive to deploy their new and greatly improved weapons and tactics against a bellicose enemy that consistently outguns but constantly underestimates the Guardians' willingness to fight for their survival and return to their peaceful way of life.

Cabanocey
Author: Lillian C. Bourgeois
Publisher: Pelican Publishing
ISBN: 9781455601707
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
Louisiana has sixty-four parishes, and many of them are as individual and different as the state itself is different from others in the Union. St. James Parish, a small parish of 249 square miles, is not only one of the oldest settlements in the state, but it is different in its population make-up and is important historically. Cabanocey . . . is a splendid history of the Parish of St. James. . . . Lillian C. Bourgeois captured the spirit that animates the population, which is descended from French, Spanish, Acadian, German, and Creole peoples. Bourgeois writes of the population's customs, beliefs, language differences, and folklore. Cabanocey is not a collection of dry facts and dates; rather, it vividly describes how, more than one hundred years ago, the people of St. James Parish lived, who they were, and what they contributed to their parish and their state. Before the Civil War, St. James Parish was the educational center of Louisiana, and Jefferson College was the first important college in the state. Founded in 1830, it had fine buildings, a well-equipped laboratory, and an impressive library. The Convent of the Sacred Heart (1835) for girls was well-known by prominent families in Louisiana, Mexico, and Central America, who sent their daughters there. Cabanocey contains St. James genealogies and thousands of names of early settlers, including the soldiers, taxpayers, officials, prominent families, and the first settlers and their children. From the early censuses and church and court records, descent is traced for many names. The censuses of 1766, 1769, and 1777 are complete and were obtained from the archives in Seville, Spain.

Demonstratives and Definite Articles as Nominal Auxiliaries
Author: Dorian Roehrs
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027255237
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 212
Book Description
Written in the cartographic tradition, this monograph is concerned with the inner structure and derivation of noun phrases. It proposes that demonstratives and definite articles are similar to auxiliaries in the clause. Referencing mostly Germanic languages, the book argues that determiners are base generated below adjectives and subsequently move to the left periphery in a successive-cyclic fashion. Demonstrating that determiners are complex elements, it is proposed that languages vary with regard to when and what part of the determiner they move. This provides a novel account of the variation in the Scandinavian noun phrase. With various copies left behind by moving the determiner, the restrictive and non-restrictive readings of adjectives and relative clauses are suggested to follow from the interpretation of these different copies. The system is extended to the strong and weak adjective inflections in German. Proposing that determiners are auxiliaries in the nominal domain explains these apparently unrelated data in a uniform way.
