Book Description
"Soars into sublime meditation...what makes this book so extraordinary is her willingness to reveal exactly what goes on in the sometimes mysterious encounter between therapist and patient."—The Los Angeles Times. A moving account of a true-life double healing through psychotherapy. In this brave, iconoclastic, and utterly unique book, psychotherapist Annie Rogers chronicles her remarkable bond with Ben, a severely disturbed five-ear-old. Orphaned, fostered, neglected, and forgotten in a household fire, Ben finally begins to respond to Annie in their intricate and revealing platy therapy. Catastrophically failed by her own therapist, she is hospitalized with a breakdown that renders her unable to speak. Then she and her gifted new analyst must uncover where her story of childhood terror overlaps with Ben's, and learn how she can complete her work with the child by creating a new story from the old—one that ultimately heals them both.

Book Description
A multidisciplinary group of prominent scholars investigates the historical relationship between sexually transmitted infections and infertility. Untreated gonorrhea and chlamydia cause infertility in a proportion of women and men. Unlike the much-feared venereal disease of syphilis--"the pox"--gonorrhea and chlamydia are often symptomless, leaving victims unaware of the threat to their fertility. Science did not unmask the causal microorganisms until the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Their effects on fertility in human history remain mysterious. This is the first volume to address the subject across more than two thousand years of human history. Following a synoptic editorial introduction, part 1 explores the enigmas of evidence from ancient and early modern medical sources. Part 2 addresses fundamental questions about when exactly these diseases first became human afflictions, with new contributions from bioarcheology, genomics, and the history of medicine, producing surprising new insights. Part 3 presents studies of infertility and its sociocultural consequences in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Africa, Oceania, and Australia. Part 4 examines the quite different ways the infertility threat from STIs was perceived--by scientists, the public, and government--in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Germany, France, and Britain, concluding with a pioneering empirical estimate of the infertility impact in Britain.

Book Description
In the small town of Aetheria, a group of friends embarks on an unexpected journey of understanding, compassion, and self-discovery. Ankit, a mysterious and enigmatic young man, harbors a secret medical condition that sets him apart from his peers. Unbeknownst to his friends, Ankit battles with the daily challenges posed by a chronic and stigmatized ailment—cold sores. As the story unfolds, Ankit's friends—Riya, Arjun, and Maya—curiously observe his peculiar habits. They notice his reluctance to indulge in shared meals, his avoidance of sipped drinks and cigarettes, and his meticulousness with personal hygiene. Intrigued and concerned, they embark on a mission to uncover the truth behind Ankit's behavior. Driven by their unwavering friendship, the group delves into a world of medical research, consultations with specialists, and heart-to-heart conversations. They soon discover the harsh realities and social stigma surrounding cold sores—a seemingly minor affliction with significant implications. With each revelation, the friends come to understand the physical and emotional toll it takes on Ankit's life. "The Hidden Affliction" explores themes of empathy, acceptance, and the power of human connection. As the friends dig deeper into Ankit's condition, they find themselves questioning their own prejudices and misconceptions about medical conditions. Through their journey, they learn that true friendship goes beyond superficial judgments and requires genuine compassion. As the story reaches its climax, Ankit's friends rally together to support him and create a safe space where he can openly discuss his struggles and fears. Their unwavering support helps Ankit embrace his condition with confidence, challenging societal norms and fostering a broader awareness of the impact of seemingly insignificant medical conditions on individuals' lives.

Affliction

Affliction PDF Author: Laura Hall
Publisher: She Writes Press
ISBN: 164742125X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
In 1937, at the age of nineteen, Ralph Hall, suicidal, revealed his sexual orientation to his grandmother, knowing she would comfort him. He was out for three years afterwards, until an indiscretion sent him back into the closet. At twenty-four, while in the army, he met and married Irene. The couple made their home on the San Francisco Peninsula and had four children. Ralph was an attentive husband and father—albeit with an intense interest in interior design, flower arranging, and fine objects—and a diligent worker who rose to payroll accountant at Standard Oil. It wasn't until 1975 that Ralph came out to his middle daughter, Laura, telling her that he had once considered his sexuality an aberration, an affliction. She was shocked, as the possibility her father might be gay had never crossed her mind. Irene had known Ralph’s secret for eighteen years, but the two remained married until she died. It was only then that this charismatic man and devoted father, by now in his eighties, could freely express his authentic, gay self. Here, Laura paints a vivid and honest portrait of her beloved father and the effect his secret had on her own life.

Book Description
The legendary Encyclopedia of Medicine is a dizzying collection of maladies: an amnesia that causes everyone you've ever met to forget you exist, while you remain perfectly, painfully aware of your history. A wound that grows with each dark thought or evil deed you commit but shrinks with every act of kindness. A disease that causes your body to imitate death, stopping your heart, cooling your blood. Will the fit pass before they bury you--or after? The Afflictions is a magical compendium of pseudo-diseases, an encyclopedia of archaic medicine written by a contemporary physician and scientist. Little by little, these bizarre and mystical afflictions frame an eternal struggle: between human desire and the limits of bodily existence. First published in English in the United States, The Afflictions has since been published in Argentina, Italy, and India. This second U.S. edition features the original illustrations created by Pia Valentinis for the Italian language edition.
