Book Description
Researcher and author Roy Posner presents a chapter-by-chapter analysis of Sri Aurobindo's metaphysical treatise The Life Divine, perhaps the most profound book ever written on the nature of spirit, creation, life, evolution, and human potential. (2016) REVIEWS: "This book is an excellent introduction to the profoundly insightful works of the Indian sage Sri Aurobindo. Aurobindo is presently not well known to western readers, but I believe this will change in the near future. He definitely is one of the "enlightened ones" whose vision serves to bridge and unify eastern mysticism with western empiricism demonstrating how both are essential to the coming world order. Aurobindo is a difficult writer to penetrate however and this is where Posner provides the invaluable service of making him more accessible. Highly recommended!" Michael "I am quite moved by your analysis of the great book "Life Divine" by Shri Aurobindo. Never have I come across such a profound analysis of the book." Bappaditya (India) "What excellent work the analysis of [Sri Aurobindo's] "The Life Divine" is! I'm sure that the "Overview Opening" opens the door to many thousands perhaps who might turn away from it otherwise." Bill "Last night I googled "aurobindo" and saw your web-page on analysis and summary of The Life Divine and had a look-see. And man, was I excited!! It all makes sense because of the way you present Sri A. writings. ... I found your analysis, your unpacking of Sri. A.'s very IMPORTANT WORK spot on!" __ Review in The Indian Diaspora: ‘An Analysis of Sri Aurobindo’s The Life Divine’ [Mind boggling in its sweep and size, the book delves deep into the fundamental aspects of consciousness, ranging from the very highest to the lowest levels.] Sri Aurobindo’s magnum opus, The Life Divine, is perhaps the most sublime philosophical tract on the nature of existence, human evolution and how the universe came into being. Mind boggling in its sweep and size, the book delves deep into the fundamental aspects of consciousness, ranging from the very highest to the lowest levels. It plumbs every known and unknown realm in the cosmic order and makes sense of the bewildering phenomena underlying all life. The thousand page tome bears the imprint of Sri Aurobindo’s formidable intellect and yoga, his grasp of arts, science, politics, history, philosophy, literature and mastery of a dozen European and Indian languages. It is believed that these metaphysical explorations are not a matter of mere theorizing or speculation, but based on his actual experiences. He has been lauded by Nobel Laureate Romain Rolland as “the foremost of Indian thinkers, who has realized the most complete synthesis between the genius of the West and of the East." Roy Posner, a global authority on the Mahayogi, long regarded as “the Albert Einstein of human and cosmic consciousness,” avers that ‘The Life Divine’ is “a very difficult, if not impossible book to navigate,” because it conveys complex concepts in a highly condensed and weighty language. Why should his stirring message about the potentiality of human transformation into a more divinized version of itself, be not made more universally accessible, Posner reasoned. Sri Aurobindo implied that progression of mankind through mineral, plant and animal stages will find fulfilment in a more perfected, divinized avatar once the human species reaches the pinnacle of evolution, where it is poised midway. His statement marked a radical break with the predominant spiritual outlook that placed a premium on moksha (freedom from the cycle of births and deaths) or attaining heaven, as the highest goal of life. Accordingly, Posner, steeped in the sage’s vision and philosophy, a voyage of discovery sparked by Satprem’s “Adventure of Consciousness” in the 1970s and his own familiarity with the subtle workings of destiny, went ahead with a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the book. Notwithstanding the many challenges along the way, the California based author, writer and software developer completed “An Analysis of Sri Aurobindo’s The Life Divine,” in eight years, nearly a century after its serialization in the Arya, a Pondicherry based journal. The Life Divine, which for Posner is “a revelation of truth and insight never before expressed in all the annals of spiritual literature,” is structured in two parts. Book I entitled “The Omnipresent Reality and The Universe,” comprises 28 chapters. Book II “The Knowledge and The Ignorance: The Spiritual Evolution,” is further subdivided into in two sections, each running into 14 chapters, making up a total of 56 chapters. Some of the chapters are ‘The Human Aspiration,’ ‘The Materialist Denial,’ ‘The Refusal of the Ascetic,’ ‘Conscious Force.’ Posner’s work comprises 478 pages, including 16 of introduction, told in a simple, direct and gripping language. It offers an illuminating, chapter-wise analysis of ‘The Life Divine.’ It begins with a summary and description of the salient features, followed by his insightful commentary and essays, additional thoughts where required. He also brings out the core idea implicit in any chapter, which might be overlooked by the reader. ‘The Analysis’ can be read as a companion volume to ‘The Life Divine.’ For instance, summing up ‘Aspirations,’ the book’s first chapter, Posner says: “Sri Aurobindo concludes that just as the animal was the laboratory that worked out the emergence of Man, so too Man is the laboratory working out the emergence of the Spirit, God in creation.” Contradictions or opposites are inherent in life. “But Sri Aurobindo says that should not deter or deflate us, because that is Nature's indomitable way of progress,” according to Posner. Posner adds: “One striking example is what occurred in the aftermath of WWII. Out of that horrible war came the UN, the EU and many other global developments that might not have arisen for centuries, if ever. Thus, the negative served a great purpose in bringing forth progress in life.” Similarly, “in Dumas' Les Miserables, the evil Thenardier is the person who brings about the reconciliation and happiness amongst the three central character, Marius, Cossette, and Jean Valjean.” In the second chapter, ‘The Materialist Denial,’ Posner writes that after establishing spirit and matter as two sides of the same coin, Sri Aurobindo “focuses on each side of the apparent division, beginning with the material view of things. . . . He concludes by showing what the spiritual and material views of existence have things in common; one being that they both seek to overcome death and suffering; each from their own direction.” How can these contradictions be harmonized? Sri Aurobindo says that rising beyond the surface helps one develop a truer view of life. ”Or to put it another way,” writes Posner, “this movement in consciousness from the surface to the depths enables us to shed our divided nature, perceive the oneness and unity of all things, enabling us to become whole and thereby fulfil our human aspiration.” -Sudip Talukdar www.theIndianDiaspora.com

Book Description
Sri Aurobindo's principal philosophic work, a theory of spiritual evolution culminating in the transformation of man from a mental into a supramental being and the advent of a divine life upon earth. In my explanation of the universe I have put forward this cardinal fact of spiritual evolution as the meaning of our existence here , Sri Aurobindo wrote to a disciple. Behind the appearances of the universe , he explained, there is the Reality of a Being and Consciousness, a Self of all things, one and eternal... This One Being and Consciousness is involved here in Matter. Evolution is the method by which it liberates itself . Evolution is possible, Sri Aurobindo argued, only because the Divine Reality has involved or hidden himself in the material universe. Involved in the world, the Divine, through His creative energy, gradually emerges in ever more conscious forms. Of this evolutionary process, Sri Aurobindo writes: Consciousness appears in what seems to be the inconscient, and once having appeared is self-impelled to grow higher and higher and at the same time to enlarge and develop towards a greater and greater perfection. Life is the first step of this release of consciousness; mind is the second, but the evolution does not finish with mind, it awaits a release into something greater, a consciousness which is spiritual and supramental. The next step of the evolution must be towards the development of Supermind and Spirit as the dominant power in the conscious being. For only then will the involved Divinity in things release itself entirely and it become possible for life to manifest perfection . Man, the highest conscious form of life upon earth, is a key to this perfection; a transitional being he is destined to exceed his limitations as a mental being and become a supramental being. This change can be brought about through a methodised effort towards self-perfection in which the individual seeks to enter into contact and union (yoga) with the Divine through aspiration and self-surrender, opens himself to the Divine Consciousness and Force which descend into him and gradually transform his mind, life and body. This integral transformation, said Sri Aurobindo, will lead to such a perfection of terrestrial existence that it might well be called a divine life on earth. Book Description
The modern world's structures are changing rapidly as new problems arise from advances in science and technology. Man's mind is unable to keep pace with the movement he has himself set in motion and the unsolvable problems that confront him, yet he aspires to self-mastery, perfection, peace, beauty, and love. What is the meaning of terrestrial life and the present evolutionary crisis? This anthology compiled from Sri Aurobindo's The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga, and The Human Cycle deals with this crucial question, tracing the past and pointing to the future of human evolution, both individual and social.
