Book Description

Fertility concerns beyond cancer are also discussed, including disorders of sexual differentiation, gender dysphoria and thalassemia. Practical chapters on pediatric oncofertility in the clinic round out the book, covering setting up a practice, counseling and consent, disclosure and insurance considerations. Concluding chapters document fertility preservation techniques and outcomes internationally, with contributions from Portuguese, Brazilian and Japanese authors. Fertility Preservation in the Pediatric Population

Fertility Preservation in the Pediatric Population PDF Author: Asma Chattha
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832544479
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 90

Book Description
Fertility preservation in children has long only been considered for those facing gonadotoxic treatments in the setting of new diagnoses of cancer. However, this field is now being expanded to include children with other conditions affecting fertility such as rheumatologic/nephrologic disease and even the transgender population, where fertility preservation counseling and discussion is in its infancy. Research regarding the optimal methods, timing, and eventual outcomes of both ovarian and testicular tissue storage in prepubertal girls and boys, respectively, as well as data on outcomes of oocyte and semen cryopreservation in adolescence is lacking. Deriving mainly from literature in adults, ovarian tissue cryopreservation has recently been deemed non-experimental; knowledge gaps still exist in the pediatric population.

Fertility Cryopreservation

Fertility Cryopreservation PDF Author: Ri-Cheng Chian
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 0521517788
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
Protecting the reproductive potential of young patients undergoing cancer therapy is increasingly important. With modern treatment protocols, 80% of patients can be expected to survive. It has been estimated that up to one in 250 young adults will be a survivor of childhood cancer in the future; infertility, however, may be a consequence. As a wide range of fertility preservation methods are increasingly offered by clinicians, this systematic and comprehensive textbook dealing with the cryobiology, technology and clinical approach to this therapy will be essential reading to infertility specialists, embryologists, oncologists, cryobiologists, ObGyns, andrologists, and urologists with an interest in fertility preservation. Fertility Cryopreservation reviews all the techniques of this increasingly important field within reproductive medicine. It covers the basic principles of pertinent cryobiology, and contains major sections on the different therapies available, written by international specialists combining experience from both academic centers and commercial industries.

Preservation of Fertility

Preservation of Fertility PDF Author: Togas Tulandi
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781842142424
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
Many technologies exist for men and women to preserve fertility, and advances are being made all the time. Sadly, this information is not always well known in the oncology community and is, therefore, not presented to all eligible cancer patients. Reflecting the latest advances in the field and offering practical information useful to clinicians and scientists, Preservation of Fertility addresses new concepts, progress in reproductive techniques, novel treatment modalities, pregnancy after cancer treatment, patient care issues, and professional responsibilities. Tulandi and Gosden have assembled an outstanding group of internationally recognized specialists to address the entire spectrum of issues regarding fertility preservation. They begin with a discussion of age and fertility, epidemiology of cancer survival and fertility, and the vulnerability of the reproductive system to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The book includes coverage of methods for preserving fertility, new developments in the laboratory for preserving gametes and gonadal tissue, and the psychosocial, legal, and ethical issues of fertility preservation. A powerful knowledge tool for the medical community, this pioneering book provides a complete understanding of the techniques for preserving fertility.

Blood and Marrow Transplantation Long Term Management

Blood and Marrow Transplantation Long Term Management PDF Author: Bipin N. Savani
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119612748
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 464

Book Description
Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) provides curative therapy for a variety of diseases. Over the past several decades, significant advances have been made in the field of HCT, to the point where HCT has become an integral part of treatment modality for a variety of hematologic malignancies and some nonmalignant diseases. HCT remains an important treatment option for a wide variety of hematologic and nonhematologic disorders, despite recent advances in the field of immunologic therapies. Factors driving this growth include expanded disease indications, greater donor options (expanding unrelated donor registries and haploidentical HCT), and accommodation of older and less fit recipients. The development of less toxic pretransplant conditioning regimens, more effective prophylaxis of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), improved infection control, and other advances in transplant technology have resulted in a rapidly growing number of transplant recipients surviving long-term free of the disease for which they were transplanted. The changes over decades in the transplant recipient population and in the practice of HCT will have almost inevitably altered the composition of the long-term survivor population over time. Apart from an increasingly older transplant recipient cohort, the pattern of transplant indications has shifted from the 1990s when chronic myeloid leukemia made up a significant proportion of allo-HCT indications. Changes in cell source, donor types, conditioning regimens, GVHD prophylaxis, and supportive care have all occurred, with ongoing reductions in both relapse and non-relapse mortality (NRM) have been demonstrated. These patients have increased risks for a variety of late complications, which can cause morbidity and mortality. Most long-term survivors return to the care of their local hematologists/oncologists or primary care physicians, who may not be familiar with specialized monitoring and management of long complications after HCT for this patient population. As HCT survivorship increases, the focus of care has shifted to the identification and treatment of long-term complications that may affect quality of life and long-term morbidity and mortality. Preventive care as well as early detection and treatments are important aspects to reducing morbidity and mortality in long-term survivors after allo-HCT. This second edition, Blood and Marrow Transplantation Long-Term Management: Survivorship after Transplant, provides up-to-date information about diagnosis, screening, treatment, and long-term surveillance of long-term survivors after HCT.

Pediatric and Adolescent Andrology

Pediatric and Adolescent Andrology PDF Author: Carlo Foresta
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030800156
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
This book addresses and summarizes the main andrological disorders (genital, reproductive or sexual diseases) that may originate in childhood or adolescence. Since many of the andrological diseases that occur in adulthood originate before the age of 18 and sometimes even during gestation, andrological evaluation is essential during childhood to highlight anomalies in the genital organs. During puberty, evaluation can help to monitor growth and secondary sex characteristics, and to assess e.g. the possible presence of an eunucoid habitus, gynecomastia, testicular hypotrophy or varicocele, a very common pathology in young people. During adolescence, the assessment of risk factors, such as those related to certain lifestyles, is of fundamental importance for primary prevention. Moreover, in late adolescence the focus shifts to preventing sexually transmitted infections, or to dealing with possible discomforts related to the sexual sphere. Finally, ensuring young people’s genital and sexual health also means protecting their fertility. Written by respected experts in the field, this book constitutes an innovative resource, combining updated, reliable and comprehensive information with agile consultation in order to provide a streamlined approach to the care of children and adolescents with such disorders.
