English as a Medium of Instruction in South Asia

English as a Medium of Instruction in South Asia PDF Author: Ram Ashish Giri
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000985784
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 342

Book Description
This book examines the ‘English mania phenomenon’ and the complex circumstances of adopting English Medium Instruction (EMI) by South Asian education systems and the effect of an uneven distribution of resources on the already under-resourced countries in the region. Chapters explore linguistic, social, and economic injustices by using an analytic-critical approach to examinations of the place, role, provisions, and practices of EMI in specific English language teaching (ELT) contexts. The book consequently advocates for the wholescale reform of a system, which, the authors argue, is unjust. Ultimately, the book explores socio-cultural, poststructuralist, and English linguistic imperialism theories to contribute a South Asian perspective on the controversy surrounding EMI and examine its role within a wider global discourse on equity and social justice. Critically examining the spread of English in South Asia, this book will be of relevance to researchers, scholars, and postgraduate students in applied linguistics, language education, TESOL, and sociolinguistics.

The Teaching and Acquisition of South Asian Languages

The Teaching and Acquisition of South Asian Languages PDF Author: Vijay Gambhir
Publisher: University of Pennsylvania Press
ISBN: 9780812233285
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 250

Book Description
The first book to apply the latest methodological analysis to the languages of South Asia, The Teaching and Acquisition of South Asian Languages provides a much needed examination of learners and their learning patterns, language materials and their delivery, classroom environments, and learning conditions beyond the classroom. The contributors, accredited researchers and experienced teachers, test important universal learning hypotheses on "less commonly taught languages" and find that those circumstances have significant implications for theory and practice. The book brings into focus a variety of issues related to linguistic theory, second language acquisition research, non-verbal communication, discourse appropriateness, learner variation, and strategies for developing speaking, listening, and reading skills. It is also a valuable addition to the general body of knowledge in the field of adult language acquisition. A carefully prepared index and an extensive bibliography covering both the South Asian field and general literature enhance the book's usefulness as a reference guide.

Asian English Language Classrooms

Asian English Language Classrooms PDF Author: Handoyo Puji Widodo
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317626524
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
The teaching of English in the Asian context is always challenging and dynamic because both teachers and learners have diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Equally important, where English is not widely used outside the classroom, English language classrooms are an authentic site of learner engagement. For these reasons, for all those concerned with contemporary English language teaching (ELT) in Asia, Asian English Language Classrooms: Where Theory and Practice Meet, provides an account of theoretical orientations and practices in the teaching of English to multilingual speakers whose primary language is not English. While covering the fundamental ELT areas (e.g., the teaching of language skills, educational literature, the use of technology in ELT, the role of pragmatics in ELT, social psychology of the language classroom, and language classroom management) with which every language teacher and teacher trainer must be concerned, this volume showcases how particular orientations shape ELT practices. We believe that practicing English teachers must have a heightened awareness of the theory behind their practice. At the same time, the theoretical stance must be firmly anchored in actual classrooms. Containing newly commissioned chapters written by well-regarded and emerging scholars, this book will appeal not only to beginning teachers or teachers in training but also to established teachers around Asia where English is used as a lingua franca. If you are a student teacher of English or an English teacher who would like to see what other progressive teachers like you are doing across Asia, this is the book you have been looking for.

The Acquisition of English Grammar and Phonology by Cantonese ESL Learners

The Acquisition of English Grammar and Phonology by Cantonese ESL Learners PDF Author: Alice Yin Wa Chan
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000818373
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
Chan’s exploration of the acquisition of English grammar and phonology by Cantonese learners of English as a Second Language (ESL) offers insights into the specific challenges that learners often encounter and posits ways to help them overcome those challenges. Possible sources of the challenges are also examined. The book covers the basic differences between English and Cantonese grammar as well as those between English and Cantonese phonology. Chan discusses the kinds of grammatical and phonological problems that Cantonese ESL learners often have in their acquisition of English. In terms of grammar, various structures are reviewed, including errors which are clearly due to L1 interference and also those which may not be directly L1-related. Learners’ common misconceptions about relevant concepts are also revealed. In terms of phonology, both speech perception and speech production problems at the segmental and suprasegmental levels are examined. For learner problems which may be the result of L1 interference, a contrastive approach is adopted in analysing the cause and nature of the errors. Chan also offers readers pedagogical insights to target common grammatical problems, including the use of an algorithmic approach, the use of a discovery-based consciousness-raising approach and the use of metalinguistic explanations. As far as the learning of English phonology is concerned, she argues that the training of speech production should go hand-in-hand with that of speech perception. Future research can experiment with the proposed teaching ideas with Cantonese ESL learners and learners of other native languages. Researchers and ESL teaching professionals will find the insights and research contained within this volume invaluable when encountering or researching Chinese ESL learners.
