Book Description
Goold Brown (7 March 1791 – 31 March 1857) was an American grammarian. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, the third child of Smith Brown and Lydia Gould. His family could be traced to some of the earliest Quakers in New England. Author Preface : After about fifteen years devoted chiefly to grammatical studies and exercises, during most of which time I had been alternately instructing youth in four different languages, thinking it practicable to effect some improvement upon the manuals which explain our own, I prepared and published, for the use of schools, a duodecimo volume of about three hundred pages; which, upon the presumption that its principles were conformable to the best usage, and well established thereby, I entitled, "The Institutes of English Grammar." Of this work, which, it is believed, has been gradually gaining in reputation and demand ever since its first publication, there is no occasion to say more here, than that it was the result of diligent study, and that it is, essentially, the nucleus, or the groundwork, of the present volume.

Taming the Tongue in the Heyday of English Grammar (1711-1851)

Taming the Tongue in the Heyday of English Grammar (1711-1851) PDF Author: Bryan A. Garner
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781605830926
Category : English language
Languages : en
Pages : 301

Book Description
An exploration of a surprisingly combative period in the history of English grammar. Heated arguments can break out over many things: slander, insults to a person's honor--and, during one period in English history, grammar. In his new book detailing the controversies and fraught histories that accompanied efforts to regularize English grammar, Bryan A. Garner shows that the grammarians of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were a surprisingly contentious and opinionated lot. Taming the Tongue in the Heyday of English Grammar (1711-1851) makes the primers of the period come alive in ways that their concerned and idiosyncratic authors might not have envisioned. The entries in Taming the Tongue--which has nearly five hundred color illustrations--are packed with scrupulously recorded information on the content and publication details of the primers, as well as tantalizing tales from the authors' lives. Combining scholarly rigor with lively anecdotes, Garner sheds light on the controversies and unexpectedly fiery histories of English grammatical disputes.

Founding Grammars

Founding Grammars PDF Author: Rosemarie Ostler
Publisher: Macmillan
ISBN: 1250046122
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
"Standard grammar and accurate spelling are widely considered hallmarks of a good education, but their exact definitions are much more contentious -- capable of inciting a full-blown grammar war at the splice of a comma, battles readily visible in the media and online in the comments of blogs and chat rooms. With an accessible and enthusiastic journalistic approach, Ostler considers these grammatical shibboleths, tracing current debates back to America's earliest days, an era when most families owned only two books -- the Bible and a grammar primer. Along the way, she investigates colorful historical characters on both sides of the grammar debate in her efforts to unmask the origins of contemporary speech." --
