Book Description
Empower students to stand up for what matters Social dynamics, conflicts, and bullying influence every child’s ability to learn. At the same time, a safe school climate depends on teaching students the skills to manage their emotions and critically think through solutions to social conflicts. How, then, do you prepare youth to be engaged learners and responsible, socially conscious citizens? Owning Up offers a solution by teaching young people to understand their individual development in relation to group behavior, the influence of social media on their conflicts, and the dynamics that lead to discrimination and bigotry. Whether you’re teaching in a school, a team, or a youth-serving organization, Owning Up is a flexible, dynamic curriculum that respects your knowledge of the young people you work with and the communities in which you serve. While there is no one-size-fits-all curriculum, Owning Up takes us leaps forward by Designing sessions to be easily facilitated by a school counselor, teacher, leader, or other professional in small group settings Combining discussions, games, and role-playing to engage adolescents in the complexities of social culture Exploring and connecting critical topics such as media analysis, gender, sexual harassment, racism, gossip, and self-image Created in collaboration with children and teens, Owning Up helps young people identify and be critical of social issues in their lives--from bullying and harassment in the classroom to systems of power and oppression in the world around them.

Owning Up

Owning Up PDF Author: Katherine Adams
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199714312
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
Owning Up argues that from its beginning the U.S. discourse on privacy has been couched in terms of violation and dispossession, so that even as nineteenth-century Americans came to regard privacy as a natural right, and to identify it with sacred ideals of democratic freedom and individuality, they also understood it as under threat or erasure. Using biographical and autobiographical writing as her primary archive, Adams traces the public narrative of imperiled privacy across five centuries. Her analyses begin with the premise that nineteenth-century conceptions of privacy became meaningful only in negative relation to the encroaching forces of market capitalism and commodification. Where previous studies treat privacy as a stable category whose defining features are middle-class domesticity and femininity, Owning Up contends that privacy is an empty category that lacks fixed content and requires constant re-articulation via panic narratives in which gender always operates in intersection with race. Chapters look at how the discourse of imperiled privacy develops in conjunction with Romantic idealism and antebellum reform, racial reconstruction and the ethic of self-right, and Social Darwinist laissez faire, and culminates at the end of the century in calls for legislation to protect the American individual's "right to be let alone."

Owning Up PDF Author: Michelle Miller-Adams
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 9780815706410
Category : Political Science

Pages : 252

Book Description
Despite the recent success of welfare reform in moving people off public assistance and into jobs, most of America's working poor are still unable to accumulate even the most minimal of assets. Even when they are getting by, they lack many of the resources—tangible and intangible—that provide middle-class Americans with a sense of security, stability, and a stake in the future. In Owning Up, Michelle Miller-Adams demonstrates how asset-building programs, used in combination with traditional income-based support, can be an effective means for helping millions of American out of poverty. Miller-Adams expands the traditional concept of assets to encompass a range of tools, experiences, resources, and support systems that are necessary if asset building is to serve as an effective anti-poverty strategy. She identifies four types of assets that can represent sources of wealth for low-income individuals and communities: economic human social, and natural assets. Economic assets include equity, retirement savings, and other financial holdings. Human assets include education, knowledge, skills, and talents. Included among social assets are the networks of trust and reciprocity that bind communities together. Natural assets include the land, water, air and other natural resources we depend on for survival. Owning Up also examines five organizations at the forefront of building assets for the poor. Their stories are told through the eyes of individuals whose lives they have helped transform. These organizations have all developed effective strategies for building assets, and Miller-Adams identifies them as models to be emulated elsewhere. The profiled organizations include: Neighborhoods Incorporated of Battle Creek, Michigan. Its innovative strategies seek to increase home ownership and promote neighborhood revitalization in poor communities. The Watershed Research and Training Center. This local organization strengthens the natural resource-based economy by retraining workers and strengthening social ties. The Private Industry Partnership of Wildcat Service Corporation. Based in New York City, PIP trains former welfare recipients in New York City for entry-level white collar jobs. Iowa's Institute for Social and Economic Development. This microenterprise development organization is one of the largest U.S. based organizations training low-income entrepreneurs. The Corporation for Enterprise Development. CFED, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank that has been instrumental in showing that poor people can and will save if given the opportunities and incentives for doing so. They have helped put Individual Development Accounts on the national agenda.

Beyond Sorry: How to Own Up, Make Good, and Move Forward After a Crisis PDF Author: Ray Hennessey
Publisher: Fulton Books, Inc.
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 129

Book Description
Everybody messes up. In relationships. In business. In life. It's a fact of human nature that we're flawed. People aren't inherently bad, but humans tend to do a lot of bad things. Everyone has engaged in behavior they're not proud of. We all have secrets, and we're all prone to traits and impulses we wish we didn't have. History, literature, and music for centuries have given us examples of falls from grace, tragedies, and fatal flaws. And then came the digital age. With the proliferation of social media, so much of our personal and professional behavior can suddenly find itself in the public view. What we do personally affects us professionally and vice versa. The human tendency to fail those who trust us has changed from a personal crisis to one with a large audience often clamoring for some measure of retribution. As humans, professionally and personally, we find ourselves at risk of lasting reputational damage if we don't find a way to recover and move forward. Beyond Sorry: How to Own Up, Make Good, and Move Forward After a Crisis lays out the framework for people to offer sincere and lasting apologies that can help turn around their careers or personal lives in the digital age. Redemption of one's reputation isn't easy. It takes more than a simple apology. That's what going beyond sorry means: taking the extra steps to ensure you can fight all the hurdles in your way. Beyond Sorry explores the steps one needs to take to move forward, including finding the right words, delivering the message with credibility, taking ownership of our actions and behaviors, and living a life that shows those around us that we're worthy of another chance.
