Book Description
Excerpt from The Church in Earnest Danger? Of what? Not indeed of the downfall of either Christianity or Protestantism. What believer in the truth of revelation, or what follower of the doctrines of the Reformation, has a moment's solicitude on that point? I, for one, feel not a single trepidation for the safety of either of these. I have no doubt of the final, complete, and glo rious triumph of truth over error, and good over evil. Not withstanding the vicissitudes of human affairs, and some of them disastrous ones too, I am a firm believer in the onward course of events. The way of Providence does not resemble one of our modern railways, but is more like a noble river, which is ever winding in its channel, and which, though, amidst its many convolutions, it seems sometimes rolling back upon its source, is ever flowing towards the ocean. In such an age as this, when it would look as if a destroying angel were passing over the despotisms of all Europe, and' making way for the sudden, unexpected, and universal reign of liberty, to doubt which way the current is flowing, betrays a deplorable ignorance of the tendencies of events, and of the designs of the great Ruler of the nations. But are liberty and religion identical? Are the downfall of tyranny and of infidelity sure to be contempo raucous? Will a false and seductive philosophy necessarily and immediately wither in the light and air of freedom? Book Description
Excerpt from The Church in Earnest: A Call for the Training Necessary for World Achievements The efficiency of the Church of Jesus Christ depends on the strength of her individual members. This being true, every child Of goo should be anxious to meet every condition that will lead to his largest development and most fruitful service. Many sources of strength stand out prominently in the Word Of God for the enlargement of the believer's life. I wish here to call special attention to the grace of liberality or giving as a source of strength. It may be difficult for some minds to comprehend how liberality can become a source Of power. I am satisfied that if we Will stay close to the Word Of God and accept its teachings on this, as on other mat ters Of revelation, we shall be led to recog nize this great truth. An Earnest Ministry

An Earnest Ministry PDF Author: John Angell James
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331450931
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
Excerpt from An Earnest Ministry: The Want of the Times This work was republished a number of years ago in the city of New York, and had at that time an extensive circulation. But it gradually disappeared from the market, and for some years has been out of print or not procurable, although often inquired for. A generous friend of the Board of Publication recently found an opportunity to purchase the stereotype plates, which he did wholly at his own cost, and presented them to the Board, which is thus enabled, advantageously to the Church and to itself, to reproduce this valuable book. There are some references in the volume to persons and to local circumstances peculiar to Great Britain which, some may suppose, could have been omitted with advantage from this new issue. But after a careful examination and much reflection and counsel, it has been deemed best, to avoid any possible charge of injustice to the author, who has within a few years gone up to his reward, to reissue it without alteration or abridgment. Book Description
Excerpt from The Building of the Church The sovereign interest which this lectureship holds in its eye - the work of Preaching - has not been overlooked in the choosing of my subject. I do not forget that I am speaking to men who are interested supremely in the art of preaching, but I invite you to approach the subject through the Christian church. After so many illustrious teachers have spoken on the subject, it would be indeed presumptuous for any man at this late date to attempt to offer additional suggestion or instruction, were it not that the subject of preaching lies, like the New Jerusalem, foursquare, with an ideal number of gates on every side, through any one of which the lecturer may make his way into the heart of the imperial theme. Book Description
Excerpt from The Earnest Churchman: Being England's Reply to the Pretensions of Rome and Dissent We are expressly told in the Holy Scriptures that in the early days of Christianity the Lord added to the Church daily (not to the churches such as should be saved and we have no revelation that He would do otherwise in later times. (acts ii. The Church of the living God can never depend upon the stability of her uninstructed members. Indefinite teaching can only lead to indefinite results, and we know that a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways. (st. James i. The Sunday School and Its Methods

The Sunday School and Its Methods PDF Author: J. A. Lyons
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780332838168
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 512

Book Description
Excerpt from The Sunday School and Its Methods: A Practical Treatise for Earnest Workers in This Department of the Church of Christ This book was written because some such book was needed. That it is not from a more competent source is due to the fact that at the time'it was undertaken no one else, in the field for which it is specially designed, seemed willing to assume the responsibility of its preparation. Whether this volume is what was wanted remains to be seen. If it is not, the fault lies elsewhere than in the hon est purpose and earnest effort of which it is the represent ative. Of its deficiencies no one can be so thoroughly conscious as the writer, since no one knows so well the dis abilities under which he labored. Holding the Sunday-school to be of divine origin, it is here considered as an institution of the Church. With other ecclesiastical agencies and instrumentalities, except as related to the subject in hand, this treatise has nothing to do. Where thus related, they are spoken of in pre cisely such terms as are employed in the treatment of the main subject, and, it may be added, with a freedom which may appear to some unwarranted.
