Native American Flags

Native American Flags PDF Author: Donald T. Healy
Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press
ISBN: 0806155752
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
Flags of the Native peoples of the United States proudly display symbols of tribal traditions, art, and culture. In Native American Flags, Donald T. Healy and Peter J. Orenski present an encyclopedic look at the flags and histories of 183 Native American tribes throughout the United States. Listing Indian nations alphabetically, this fully indexed reference includes both federally recognized tribes and other groups, and offers an image of each tribe’s flag and a map of their location within the United States. Each entry includes a brief summary of the tribe’s history, presents information on contemporary Indian peoples, and describes and illustrates in detail the symbolism and imagery of each Native American flag. A gallery of color plates includes full-color representations of 192 historic and contemporary Native flags. The authors visited more than two dozen reservations and surveyed more than 250 tribal governments, working closely with them to produce this authoritative volume. A portion of their original research on Native American flags was published in Raven, the journal of the North American Vexillological Association, an organization devoted to the scientific study of flags. This thoroughly revised and updated edition includes more than fifty new flags and accompanying tribal listings and full-color representations of each flag. Carl Waldman’s foreword places the flags within the context of Indian history, mythology, and art, and shows how Native American flags have become powerful symbols of Native unity and tribal sovereignty.

Under Two Flags PDF Author: William M Fowler
Publisher: Naval Institute Press
ISBN: 1612511961
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
Vividly written and well researched by a noted historian of the period, this succinct history credits the Union Navy as an essential element in the northern victory. Neither ponderous nor hagiographic, the work presents characters and events that have been previously neglected and offers candid assessments of officers, men, and material. Originally published in 1990, when it was a Military History Book Club selection, the work is considered a must for Civil War buffs. It is an authoritative and gripping story of the battles waged. The author provides a rare look at the war fought by primitive northern gunboats drifting through Louisiana's muddy bayous, Yankee merchantmen captured by rebel privateers at sea, and Union ironclads subduing hotly defended Southern forts. Nor does William Fowler neglect the subtler sparrings behind the scenes: War Secretary Stanton and Navy Secretary Welles competing for Lincoln's favor and Welles's fierce duel of strategies with his Confederate counterpart, Stephen Mallory. Finally, the author describes the astonishing transformation of the Navy itself from a ragtag fleet of aging steamers and paddleboats to one of the most powerful waterborne forces in the world.

Book Description
Under Two Flags tells the story of an English aristocrat, apparently in disgrace, who disappears and joins a French battalion in Algeria, loosely based on the Foreign Legion. The novel is about The Hon. Bertie Cecil (nicknamed Beauty of the Brigades). In financial distress because of his own profligacy and the loss of an important horse-race on which he has bet extensively, and falsely accused of forgery, but unable to defend himself against the charge without injuring the "honour" of a lady and also exposing his younger brother, Cecil fakes his own death and exiles himself to Algeria where he joins the Chasseurs d'Afrique, a regiment comprising soldiers from various countries, rather like the French Foreign Legion.
