This book is about perception, emotion, and affect in architecture: how and why we feel the way that we do and the ways in which our surroundings ​and bodies contribute to this. Our experience of architecture is an embodied one, with all our senses acting in concert as we move through time and space. The book picks up where much of the critique of architectural aestheticism at the end of the twentieth century left off: illustrating the limitations and potential consequences of attending to architecture as the visually biased practice which has steadily become the status quo within both industry and education. It draws upon interdisciplinary research to elucidate the reasons why this is counter-productive to the creation of meaningful places and ​to articulate the embodied richness of our touching encounters. A "felt-phenomenology" is introduced as a more​-than visual alternative capable of sustaining our physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Between 1996 and 2000 the renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron built a new research centre together with a library, auditorium and cafeteria for the pharmaceutical company Roche in Basle. Situated on the outskirts of the town on the edge of the industrial area, the building was to include a closed section for laboratories yet should also be publicly accessible: the ideal starting point for an interdisciplinary solution. Artist Rémy Zaugg worked together with the architects developing the colours used. In particular he created a dramatic blue wall which separates public and restricted areas. This publication documents the entire project from its genesis to the completed construction, using texts, sketches, plans and photographs. Digitalization has transformed the discourse of architecture: that discourse is now defined by a wealth of new terms and concepts that previously either had no meaning, or had different meanings, in the context of architectural theory and design. Its concepts and strategies are increasingly shaped by influences emerging at the intersection with scientific and cultural notions from modern information technology. The new series Context Architecture seeks to take a critical selection of concepts that play a vital role in the current discourse and put them up for discussion. In the context of discussions of the medial, the notion of simulation plays a central role in architecture as illusion and imitation. In dialogue with information technology and computer science, however, that notion has now taken on a new quality in architectural discourse. Today when we speak of simulation we primarily think of "computer simulation," the technical ability to simulate processes. Whereas simulation used to refer to a mode of presentation, it now connects architecture with the sciences and represents a strategic and methodological instrument, a tool of discovery. With the scientific principle of simulation the focus shifts to the idea of "modeling a dynamic system" (Norbert Wiener), not just presenting finished products but going in search of solutions and developing systems!
