Highway Engineering

Book Description
Excerpt from Highway Engineering: Rural Roads and Pavements In writing a text-book on a subject which is growing as rapidly as highway engineering is at the present time one finds himself confronted with a varying practice. The student who desires the latest up-to-date matter on roads must consult contemporaneous engineering periodicals and literature and sift from them what he deems best suited to his purpose. In (his work the author has endeavored to bring into a brief space the most recent and best practice as determined by his experience and research. As this text Is more especially concerned with rural roads, those types of roads most common in the rural districts, small cities, and towns, or best adapted for use therein, have been covered in greatest detail. Pavements have been treated largely with a view to their use for country roads, although the treatment, is thought to be sufficiently comprehensive to form a beginning or short, course for those desirous of taking up city paving work. The author is of the opinion that almost all of the principles of road building applicable to rural highways are equally applicable to city streets and vice versa. While technical analyses and technical language have not been shunned, it has been constantly borne in mind that the book is intended primarily to form one of a series in agricultural education. It is believed, therefore, that the work is of such a character that it will be read with interest by the layman and, because here are brought together many ideas from many sources, will serve as a useful reference book for professional engineers, road builders, and road officers. Road Engineering for Development

Road Engineering for Development PDF Author: Richard Robinson
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1482288206
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 539

Book Description
Developing countries in the tropics have different natural conditions and different institutional and financial situations to industrialized countries. However, most textbooks on highway engineering are based on experience from industrialized countries with temperate climates, and deal only with specific problems. Road Engineering for Development (published as Highway and Traffic Engineering in Developing Countries in its first edition) provides a comprehensive description of the planning, design, construction and maintenance of roads in developing countries. It covers a wide range of technical and non-technical problems that may confront road engineers working in this area. The technical content of the book has been fully updated and current development issues are focused on. Designed as a fundamental text for civil engineering students this book also offers a broad, practical view of the subject for practising engineers. It has been written with the assistance of a number of world-renowned specialist professional engineers with many years experience in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Central America.

Rural Road Engineering in Developing Countries

Book Description
Rural Road Engineering in Developing Countries provides a comprehensive coverage of the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of rural roads in developing countries and emerging nations. It covers a wide range of technical and non-technical problems that may confront road engineers working in the developing world, focusing on rural roads which provide important links from villages and farms to markets and offer the public access to health, education, and other services essential for sustainable development. Most textbooks on road engineering are based on experience in industrialised countries with temperate climates or deal only with specific issues, with many aspects of the design and construction of roads in developing regions stemming from inappropriate research undertaken in Europe and the USA. These approaches are frequently unsuitable and unsustainable for rural road network environments, particularly in low to middle income countries. This book takes on board a more recent research and application focus on rural roads, integrating it for a broad range of readers to access current information on good practice for sustainable road engineering in developing countries. The book particularly suits transportation engineers, development professionals, and graduate students in civil engineering.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Construction of Roads and Pavements Since the publication of the first edition of The Construction of Roads and Pavements, considerable progress has been made in the field of highway engineering, especially with regard to the construction of rural highways. In the second edition, the errors and omissions of the first edition have been corrected so far as they have been noted and new material has been added where it was apparent that practice had really changed. However, the unsettled conditions that have recently prevailed in the highway field have made it very difficult to determine what was real progress and what was merely compromise construction due to abnormal conditions.
