English Grammar

English Grammar PDF Author: Talmy Givón
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027220980
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 341

Book Description
The approach to language and grammar that motivates this book is unabashedly functional; grammar is not just a system of empty rules, it is a means to an end, an instrument for constructing concise coherent communication. In grammar as in music, good expression rides on good form. Figuratively and literally, grammar like musical form must make sense. But for the instrument to serve its purpose, it must first exist; the rules must be real, they can be explicitly described and taught. This book is intended for both students and teachers, at college level, for both native and nonnative speakers. With the guidance of a teacher this book will serve as a thorough introduction to the grammar of English. Volume I begins with words and their meanings, then on to propositions and simple state or event clauses – participant roles, verb types, transitivity, subjects and objects. It then covers the grammatical sub systems commonly found in simple clauses: Verbal inflections, auxiliaries and the grammar of tense-aspect modality and negation; articles determiners, pronouns and the grammar of referential coherence; the variety of noun phrases and noun modifiers.

Grammatical Constructions

Grammatical Constructions PDF Author: Masayoshi Shibatani
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780198238713
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in grammatical constructionsunits of grammar representing formmeaning correspondences. The movement in which Construction Grammar, as developed by Charles Fillmore and Paul Kay, has played a significant role, has arisen in part as aresponse to the Chomskyan modular approach, which treats grammatical constructions as epiphenomenal, dismantling their component features and attributing these to general principles of grammar. This volume is the first collection to focus on grammatical constructions per se, and is dedicated to Charles Fillmore in recognition of his leadership in the field. The papers all reflect or elaborate on his work, which shows how lexicon, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics interact in givingconstructions their individual holistic characters as basic units of grammar. Several approaches to constructions are represented here, dealing with topics that range from idiomatized constructions to traditional forms such as conditionals, relative clauses, and benefactive constructions. A unifying thread is the shared conviction that close examination of the nature ofgrammatical constructions, with particular emphasis on their idiosyncrasies and on the complex interrelationships among their forms, functions, meanings, and uses in ordinary speech and writing, provides a rich foundation upon which to build a theory of cognition, memory, and grammar.

Verb and Noun Number in English

Verb and Noun Number in English PDF Author: Wallis Hoch Reid
Publisher: London ; New York : Longman
ISBN:
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
The author presents an account of the principles shaping the morphological form of the verb. This book aims to exemplify contemporary linguistic theory. The analysis proceeds from the view that the structure of language is determined by its function as an instrument of human communication. This position breaks with sentence-based theory to return to Saussurean conception of a language as an inventory of signs. It expands the programmatic Saussurean picture by emphasizing the pervasive influence of general human psychological characteristics on both linguistic structure and language use. In contrast to sentence-based theory, sign-based theory contains no formal component of syntactic rules. It must re-characterize linguistic structure in functional, not syntactic terms.

Grammar, Meaning, and Concepts

Grammar, Meaning, and Concepts PDF Author: Susan Strauss
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131766504X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 575

Book Description
Grammar, Meaning, and Concepts: A Discourse-Based Approach to English Grammar is a book for language teachers and learners that focuses on the meanings of grammatical constructions within discourse, rather than on language as structure governed by rigid rules. This text emphasizes the ways in which users of language construct meaning, express viewpoints, and depict imageries using the conceptual, meaning-filled categories that underlie all of grammar. Written by a team of authors with years of experience teaching grammar to future teachers of English, this book puts grammar in the context of real language and illustrates grammar in use through an abundance of authentic data examples. Each chapter also provides a variety of activities that focus on grammar, genre, discourse, and meaning, which can be used as they are or can be adapted for classroom practice. The activities are also designed to raise awareness about discourse, grammar, and meaning in all facets of everyday life, and can be used as springboards for upper high school, undergraduate, and graduate level research projects and inquiry-based grammatical analysis. Grammar, Meaning, and Concepts is an ideal textbook for those in the areas of teacher education, discourse analysis, applied linguistics, second language teaching, ESL, EFL, and communications who are looking to teach and learn grammar from a dynamic perspective.
