Book Description
Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Literary Criticism "In every work regard the writer's end." - Pope. An attempt to guide a class in literature in making critical estimates of their reading resulted in the following chapters. Reference was also had to the possible needs of some who intended to serve an apprenticeship in journalism, with its incidental book-reviewing; but beyond both these purposes was kept in mind the advantage of intelligent appreciation by educated readers of such literature as should appeal to mature tastes. Accordingly sundry methods and principles of criticism have been mentioned with the intention of showing that there is a choice among them, and that the best criticism promotes good literature, of which it is itself one of the highest forms. Book Description
Excerpt from Literature and Criticism The validity of this little book depends upon the belief that the character of a writer's whole achievement can only be felt and assessed by responding sensitively to the way in which he uses words, and that the capacity to make such a response can be formed or greatly enhanced by a training in literary criticism. D. H. Lawrence says some excellent things about critics and criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Adventures in Criticism

Adventures in Criticism PDF Author: Arthur Thomas Quiller Couch

Book Description
Adventures in Criticism by Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch After twenty-five years of close toil, Professor Skeat has completed his great edition of Chaucer. It is obviously easier to be dithyrambic than critical in chronicling this event; to which indeed dithyrambs are more appropriate than criticism. For when a man writes Opus vitæ meæ at the conclusion of such a task as this, and so lays down his pen, he must be a churl (even if he be also a competent critic) who will allow no pause for admiration. And where, churl or no churl, is the competent critic to be found? The Professor has here compiled an entirely new text of Chaucer, founded solely on the manuscripts and the earliest printed editions that are accessible. Where Chaucer has translated, the originals have been carefully studied: "the requirements of metre and grammar have been carefully considered throughout" and "the phonology and spelling of every word have received particular attention." We may add that all the materials for a Life of Chaucer have been sought out, examined, and pieced together with exemplary care. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book Description
Excerpt from Some Principles of Literary Criticism The following chapters were first prepared for the college lecture room, and, although since rewritten, they doubtless still betray by a certain dull, didactic manner the place of their origin. While directing the work of college classes, I had often looked about for a book that should give a compendious statement of the essentials of literature and the grounds of critical estimate. Finding no such book, I essayed to make one. Two or three books on the subject - born, I judge, of the same want that produced this one - have indeed appeared since these lectures were first written; but their purpose and method are quite different from those I have had in mind. I have attempted neither to expound a philosophy of criticism nor to elaborate a critical method; but simply to state, as plainly as I might, some qualities that by common consent are to be found in all writing deserving to be called literature, and to lay down some fundamental principles that must be assumed in all sound critical judgments. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Guide to Literary Criticism A glance at the table of contents will clearly reveal the plan. The work is divided into three parts, the first of which treats of fundamental principles. In three chapters the nature of criticism, the relation of the author to his work, and the aesthetic principles underlying literary art are briefly discussed. The facts and principles here presented are designed to give a clearer and deeper insight into the nature and processes of criticism. Book Description
Excerpt from Adventures in the Arts: Informal Chapters on Painters Vaudeville and Poets Perhaps the most important part of Criticism is the fact that it presents to the creator a prob lem which is never solved. Criticism is to him a perpetual Presence: or perhaps a ghost which he will not succeed in laying. If he could satisfy his mind that Criticism was a certain thing: a good thing or a bad, a proper presence or an irrelevant, he could psychologically dispose of it. But he can not. For Criticism is a configuration of responses and reactions so intricate, so kaleidoscopic, that it would be as simple to category Life itself. Book Description
Excerpt from Cobwebs of Criticism I N the midst of a fair country there stood an exceeding high and holy mountain whereon the sun never set, but parleyed with it through all ages of ages, from the dawn of morning light over the moorlands till the shadows died along them at eve. And on the summit of this great steepness there was a fountain, and the sun and the skies were mirrored in its waters, and he that drank thereof might never die. And multitudes came from the uttermost parts of the earth to climb the steepness, and drink of the spring and live for ever. Some of them that came were in tattered mantles, and the food whereon they lived was bread and water; and some were in fine raiment and lived sumptuously but all turned their steps upward to where the mountain kissed the sky. And in every age the few strong men who adventured so far attained the summit but the sides of the mountain were hard and rugged and many fell by the way; and where each man fell, there they buried him, and at the foot were the graves of the many who had fallen. Book Description
Excerpt from Reputations: Essays in Criticism Of the many young poets who died or were killed during the European War, none perhaps has proved a greater loss to English letters than James Elroy Flecker. By his death in Switzerland of consumption at the age of thirty England was deprived of a poet who loved her passionately whose work will endure long into the days of peace, whose reputation is likely to go on increasing, rather than to wane. At present his poetry is still, I think, not as familiar as it deserves to be, though the number of his admirers is. steadily growing both in England and in America. Flecker was never the idol of any particular set during his lifetime, and since his death very little has been written about his personality as it appeared to those who knew him well. The memories of one who valued his friendship and was closely associated with him during his literary life may thus be not unworthy of record. The Essay on Smollett was in the anglo-saxon, which has ceased to appear; and the shorter papers, such as The Confessions of Saint Augustine, in a periodical styled Wit and Wisdom. For The Poems of William Morris the author has to thank the Editor of Longman's Magazine; for The Boy, and Mrs. Radcliffe's Novels, the Proprietors of The Cornhill Magazine for Enchanted Cigarettes, and possibly for The Supernatural in Fiction, the Proprietors of The Idler. The portrait, after Sir William Richmond, r.a., was done about the time when most of the Essays were written - and that.
