The new name is a concession I owe to some of the ablest and kindest of my critics, who, while they commended the contents of the previous volume, pointed out that it was not of the nature of a Note-book, since, instead of giving brief expository suggestions, it was composed of elaborate studies of difficult or misread Scriptures; and that, therefore, the title was inaccurate and misleading. In deference to their verdict, the justice of which I acknowledge, I have given the present series of essays and discourses another, and I hope a more accurate, title.
