Book Description
Aus dem Inhalt: Der Erste Weltkrieg in Deutschland und Österreich in frauen- und geschlechtergeschichtlicher Perspektive / Visual Representations of Women's Contribution to the First World War in France and Britain / Remembering the Great War in Portugal and Gender Perspectives / Commemoration Projects and Historiography in Hungary / Geschlechterspezifische Erinnerungsdiskurse in Italien / Gedenken an den Kriegswiderstand in Großbritannien / Im Gespräch mit Margaret R. Higonnet / Geschlechterbilder und -praktiken in der kaiserlichen Marine am Beispiel von Martin Niemöller. This issue of "L'Homme. Z. F. G." addresses a critical retro-perspective on national memory and academic cultures of the First World War. It specially focuses on the question of how far female and gender historical approaches played a role in the emerging boom in 2012 concerning the scientific and, media-public activities. The conclusions of the surveys regarding Germany/Austria, France/UK, Italy, Portugal and Hungary are various. However, in all examples it becomes clear that - if considered at all - especially female historical subjects were integrated or the analytical potential of the category gender was merely taken into consideration in order to decentralise and reshape historiographical concepts or narratives of the First Wold War.

Imperial Germany and the Great War, 1914-1918

Imperial Germany and the Great War, 1914-1918 PDF Author: Roger Chickering
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521547802
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
This important contribution to the successful textbook series New Approaches to European History explores the comprehensive impact of the First World War on Imperial Germany. It examines military aspects of the conflict, as well as the diplomacy, government, politics, and industrial mobilization of wartime Germany. Unlike other existing surveys, however, Roger Chickering also offers a rich portrait of life on the home front: the pervasive effects of 'total war' on wealthy and poor, men and women, young and old, farmers and city-dwellers, Protestants, Catholics, and Jews. This excellent, well-illustrated study of the military, political and socio-economic effects of the First World War is essential reading for all students of German and European history, as well as for those interested in the history of war and society. Now appearing in a second edition, first published in 2004, this accessible book reflects important scholarship in the field and boasts an expanded and revised bibliography.

Turning Points

Turning Points PDF Author: Richard L. DiNardo
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive and illuminating study of some of the most crucial campaigns on the Eastern Front during what was perhaps the most momentous year of World War I in that battleground. Turning Points: The Eastern Front in 1915 offers a well-researched and fascinating study of war in a distinct theater of operations and shows how it was impacted by diplomacy, coalition warfare, command, technology, and the environment in which it is conducted. In contrast to those on the Western Front, lines in the east in 1915 moved hundreds of miles. Although the work focuses more on the Central Powers, significant attention is also given to the Russians. The book follows the course of events on the Eastern Front during the critical year of 1915, proceeding chronologically from January 1915 to the end of active operations in October, with a brief mention of some action in December. In addition to the better-known campaigns in the Carpathians and Gorlice-Tarnów, the work covers lesser-known operations including the Second Battle of the Masurian Lakes, the Austro-Hungarian "Black-Yellow" offensive into eastern Galicia, and the German move into Lithuania. Naval action on the Baltic Sea is also covered.

The First World War

The First World War PDF Author: Manfried Rauchensteiner
Publisher: Böhlau Wien
ISBN: 3205793706
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1067

Book Description
The well-respected historian Manfried Rauchensteiner analyses the outbreak of World War I, Emperor Franz Joseph's role in the conflict, and how the various nationalities of the Habsburg Monarchy reacted to the disintegration of this 640-yearold empire in 1918. After Archduke Franz Ferdinand"s assassination in Sarajevo in 1914, war was inevitable. Emperor Franz Joseph intended it, and everyone in Vienna expected it. How the war began and how Austria-Hungary managed to avoid capitulation only weeks later with the help of German troops reads like a thriller. Manfried Rauchensteiner"s book is based on decades of research and is a fascinating read to the very end, even though the final outcome, the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, is already known. Originally published in German in 2013 by Böhlau, this standard work is now available in English.
