Excerpt from Epigrammes in the Oldest Cut and Newest Fashion It would hardly be maintained by the greatest devotee of the Elizabethan period that the Epigrams here reprinted have much literary merit: it might even be denied that they have any. Their interest lies almost entirely in the number of allusions to Weever's contemporaries which they contain, but these, and the extreme rarity of copies of the original edition, seem fully to justify their being made more accessible to students. With the exception of the Palladis Tamia of Francis Meres, there is, I think, no single work of so early a date which contains references by name to so many Elizabethan writers of the first or second rank. The epigram on Shakespeare is well known as one of the earliest allusions in which his name is mentioned, and besides this we have poems upon or addressed to Spenser, Jonson, Marston, Daniel, Drayton, Warner, Christopher Middleton, and several other writers of less note, besides a number of Weever's personal friends or acquaintances. It is true that in most cases the positive information which we are given is not great; but nothing can be without interest which shows us how such men as these were regarded by their contemporaries.
