L'Évangile copte de Thomas se compose de cent quatorze Iogia ou sentences attribuées à Jésus mais ne rapporte rien de son ministère, de sa passion ou de sa résurrection. II diffère un peu en cela, des autres textes trouvés en 1945 à Nag Hammadi, en Haute-Egypte, bien qu'il ait des liens avec certains d'entre eux, tels l'Évangile de Philippe ou la Pistis Sophia. Alors que les autres se distinguent sensiblement, à peu près la moitié des paroles de l'Évangile de Thomas sont pratiquement identiques à leurs équivalents synoptiques, mais elles ne sont presque jamais accompagnées des éléments interprétatifs que l'on trouve dans les Évangiles canoniques. On ne trouve, ainsi, ni allégorie ni référence à l'avenir ou à la fin des temps. Le nouvel Évangile met fortement l'accent sur la démarche individuelle, sur le Royaume intérieur " qui est déjà là mais que les hommes ne voient pas ". Par là, il rejoint les grands enseignements de l'Orient. La référence à une révélation cachée traduit une perspective gnostique dont cette traduction rend bien compte. L'association Métanoïa, qui a été constituée pour approfondir et faire connaître cet Évangile, poursuit ses recherches depuis plusieurs années. Elle réunit parmi ses membres des compétences diverses qui ont permis d'accomplir un travail d'équipe répondant à la fois aux exigences de la science et à celles de la métaphysique.
