Design of Fishways and Other Fish Facilities

Design of Fishways and Other Fish Facilities PDF Author: Charles H. Clay
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 135145577X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 315

Book Description
This new edition of the best-selling book describes the main types of fishways and fish facilities used around the world to assist the passage of fish over dams and other obstructions to their migration. It also focuses on the protection of fish (mainly young fish) from the hazards encountered in their downstream migrations. The book brings together the type of knowledge and research needed to decide on the facility used as well as its design and operation. It emphasizes the need for both biologists and engineers to collaborate in the design and indicates in what fields such collaboration would benefit fisheries conservation in the future. This is the Second Edition of the only book to bring together all of these topics worldwide under one cover.

Innovations in Fish Passage Technology

Innovations in Fish Passage Technology PDF Author: Mufeed Odeh

Category : Fishways

Pages : 240

Book Description
Odeh (Conte Anadromous Fish Research Center) presents 13 contributions which explore the technical possibilities of constructing effective fish bypass systems for hydroelectric dams, especially those that are due for relicensing in the context of new regulations. The articles consist of case studies in the effectiveness of such techniques as surface bypass systems, modular inclined screens, hydroacoustic evaluation of fish entrainment patterns, surface collection, surface spill gates, and radio-tagging and radar tracking behavior evaluation strategies. Effect of Fishway Slope on Rate of Passage of Salmonids

Effect of Fishway Slope on Rate of Passage of Salmonids PDF Author: Joseph R. Gauley
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Fish habitat improvement
Languages : en
Pages : 32

Book Description
This study on the effect of fishway slope on rate of passage of salmonids was made by comparing passage time of fish in two fishways with different slopes. It is based mainly on steelhead (Salmo gairdneri) but includes some chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and silver (Oncorhynchus kisutch) salmon. Both fishways were pool-and-overfall type in which 6 feet of elevation was gained. Passage of steelhead in the 1:8-slope fishway was in general, as fast as or faster than in the 1:16-slope fishway. In the 1:8-slope fishway, the passage time appeared to increase with an increase in rise between pools. In the 1:16-slope fishway, the passage time of steelhead increased as the season progressed.

Fish Migration and Fish Bypasses

Fish Migration and Fish Bypasses PDF Author: Mathias Jungwirth
Publisher: Wiley
ISBN: 9780852382530
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 448

Book Description
International Conference on Fish Migration and Bypass Channels held in Vienna in September 1996. It covers the range of fish pass technologies currently in use throughout the world and attempts to develop a wider, more ecological perspective on this formerly engineering-orientated discipline. Emphasis is placed on enhancing an understanding of fish migration behaviour, and achieving optimum design to meet the behavioural requirements of all known migratory species. Additional attention is paid to comparing the European trend towards constructing nature-like bypass channels with the highly technical solutions dominant in North America.
