The Hydropolitics of Dams

The Hydropolitics of Dams PDF Author: Mark Everard
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1780325428
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
The Hydropolitics of Dams charts the troubled waters of 'heavy engineering' approaches to ecosystem management, exploring the history, benefits and problems of large dams. It then explores diverse ecosystem-based approaches to management of human interactions with the water cycle, concluding that a synthesis of approaches is needed in future. The book also addresses political, economic and legal dimensions of water management. Featuring case studies from China, India and South Africa, this insightful new book argues that there are more appropriate physical and social technologies that can help to sustainably provide access to clean water for all.

Analysis of Existing Information on Adult Fish Movements Through Dams on the Upper Mississippi River

Analysis of Existing Information on Adult Fish Movements Through Dams on the Upper Mississippi River PDF Author:

Pages : 434

Book Description
During the mid-1970's, an assessment of the potential for expansion of the nation's hydroelectric generating capabilities was initiated by the passage of the Water Resources Development Act (PL 94-587). Economic feasibility studies for small-scale hydropower development were performed for sites on the Upper Mississippi River (UMR). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been asked to provide input into the final feasibility report and draft Environmental Impact Statements for hydropower development at Locks and Dams 5 and 8. This report as the following objective: to compile, review, and analyze existing information on movements of adult fish through dams on the UMR from St. Anthony Falls to Lock and Dam 14. Secondary objectives include (1) identification of information gaps about adult fish movements and UMR fisheries in general that would prevent an accurate assessment of the impacts of small-scale hydropower development on UMR fisheries; and (2) identification of impact assessment techniques, approaches, and means of obtaining the necessary data for an assessment of the impacts of small-scale hydropower development on ichthyoplankton and UMR fisheries.

Fish Physiology: The Physiology of Tropical Fishes

Fish Physiology: The Physiology of Tropical Fishes PDF Author: Adalberto Luis Val
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 9780080454276
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 400

Book Description
The Physiology of Tropical Fishes is the 21st volume of the well-known Fish Physiology series and consists of 12 chapters. The purpose of the book is to consolidate and integrate what is known about tropical fishes (marine and freshwater species). The twelve chapters focus on the physiological adaptations acquired during the evolutionary process to cope with warm and shallow hypoxic waters from tropical and neotropical hydrographic basins as well as with the intertidal and coral reef habitats which occur in abundance in tropical seas. The special characteristics of tropical fish fauna will be issued in order to explain the tropical fish radiation, which gave rise to such extreme fish diversity. This present volume, is a voyage through the tropical region reviewing the fish diversity of the main tropical freshwater sheds, including the major tropical rivers and lakes, the major dams, and marine environments. State-of-the-art information on tropical fish physiology Written by specialists working in the Tropics Offers a diverse depiction of the various tropical fishes and the environment where they inhabit 12 innovative chapters covering a concise view of growth rate, biological rhythms, feeding plasticity, cardio-respiratory design and function, diversity of structure, and much more

Tropical Stream Ecology

Tropical Stream Ecology PDF Author: David Dudgeon
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 9780080557175
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 370

Book Description
Tropical Stream Ecology describes the main features of tropical streams and their ecology. It covers the major physico-chemical features, important processes such as primary production and organic-matter transformation, as well as the main groups of consumers: invertebrates, fishes and other vertebrates. Information on concepts and paradigms developed in north-temperate latitudes and how they do not match the reality of ecosystems further south is expertly addressed. The pressing matter of conservation of tropical streams and their biodiversity is included in almost every chapter, with a final chapter providing a synthesis on conservation issues. For the first time, Tropical Stream Ecology places an important emphasis on viewing research carried out in contributions from international literature. First synthetic account of the ecology of all types of tropical streams Covers all of the major tropical regions Detailed consideration of possible fundamental differences between tropical and temperate stream ecosystems Threats faced by tropical stream ecosystems and possible conservation actions Descriptions and synstheses life-histories and breeding patterns of major aquatic consumers (fishes, invertebrates)
