Excerpt from Guidelines for the Preparation of Bibliographies When arrangement is alphabetical, it is usually by authors' last names. A single-author citation is placed before a multiple-author citation. The last names of junior authors may be used to alphabetize entries when there is a senior author of different articles having various joint authorships. Initials used for given names precede names that are Spelled out unless both versions are known to refer to the same author in which case only one form should be used. In the case of several articles by the same author, or by the same joint authorship, secondary filing is by the first word of the title not an article. Excerpt from Library Cataloguing Some years ago I prepared a Manual of Library Cataloguing, which met with more acceptance than was expected, and has been out of print for some time. Upon considering requests for a new edition, I concluded that a book upon somewhat different lines would be more likely to meet the present requirements of librarians and library assistants - this volume is the result. No pretence is made that the work is exhaustive or complete, but it is hoped that it will serve as a practical and useful introduction to the several codes of cataloguing rules. The statements made in it are not meant to be dogmatic, but they indicate the lines upon which good and accurate work is to be accomplished. As the illustrative examples were chosen from every-day books, and are worked out as simply as possible, they should be found useful by beginners; especially in preparing for the examinations of the Library Association in this subject. Excerpt from The Bibliographic Style of the American Medical Association Press The following extract from the Style-Book of the American Medical Association Press is here printed for the convenience of authors and as an aid toward uniformity and accuracy in style, especially in bibliographic work. The fact that this pamphlet is to be circulated among authors justifies the inclusion here of (A) some general remarks on the preparation of manuscripts, and (B) some publishers' rules concerning proof, reprints and exclusive publication. A. Manuscript Preparation 1. Manuscripts should be typewritten, well spaced between the lines and with ample margins. Lines should not be close-spaced for case reports or for any other matter. This point is of great importance, since the manuscript editors need to place some directions to the printer on the margin, and others between the lines of the manuscript. In some instances it may be impossible to prepare a close-spaced manuscript for the printer. Illegibility, close spacing, or other mechanical defects in the preparation of a manuscript - as well as errors in spelling, grammar and diction - may sometimes turn the scale against the acceptance of an article. Manuscripts should not be rolled, and preferably not folded, and. we repeat for emphasis, not closely written. 2. The ambiguous and inconsistent use of pronouns should be avoided. Sometimes an author will refer to himself in one place as "the writer," in another as "the author," in a third as "I," and in still another as "we." He may then go on to use the pronoun "we" with reference to the medical profession or the world at large.
