Rilke's Book of Hours

Rilke's Book of Hours PDF Author: Anita Barrows
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 9781594481567
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 276

Book Description
A FINALIST FOR THE PEN/WEST TRANSLATION AWARD The 100th Anniversary Edition of a global classic, containing beautiful translations along with the original German text. While visiting Russia in his twenties, Rainer Maria Rilke, one of the twentieth century's greatest poets, was moved by a spirituality he encountered there. Inspired, Rilke returned to Germany and put down on paper what he felt were spontaneously received prayers. Rilke's Book of Hours is the invigorating vision of spiritual practice for the secular world, and a work that seems remarkably prescient today, one hundred years after it was written. Rilke's Book of Hours shares with the reader a new kind of intimacy with God, or the divine—a reciprocal relationship between the divine and the ordinary in which God needs us as much as we need God. Rilke influenced generations of writers with his Letters to a Young Poet, and now Rilke's Book of Hours tells us that our role in the world is to love it and thereby love God into being. These fresh translations rendered by Joanna Macy, a mystic and spiritual teacher, and Anita Barrows, a skilled poet, capture Rilke's spirit as no one has done before.

Love Poems

Love Poems PDF Author: Pablo Neruda
Publisher: New Directions Publishing
ISBN: 0811221482
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 100

Book Description
Sensual, earthy love poems that formed the basis for the popular movie Il Postino, now in a beautiful gift book perfect for weddings, Valentine's Day, anniversaries, or just to say "I love you!" Charged with sensuality and passion, Pablo Neruda’s love poems caused a scandal when published anonymously in 1952. In later editions, these verses became the most celebrated of the Noble Prize winner’s oeuvre, captivating readers with earthbound images that reveal in gentle lingering lines an erotic re-imagining of the world through the prism of a lover’s body: "today our bodies became vast, they grew to the edge of the world / and rolled melting / into a single drop / of wax or meteor...." Written on the paradisal island of Capri, where Neruda "took refuge" in the arms of his lover Matilde Urrutia, Love Poems embraces the seascapes around them, saturating the images of endless shores and waves with a new, yearning eroticism. This wonderful book collects Neruda’s most passionate verses.

Manuscript Verse Collectors and the Politics of Anti-Courtly Love Poetry

Manuscript Verse Collectors and the Politics of Anti-Courtly Love Poetry PDF Author: Joshua Eckhardt
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191569747
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
This book reappraises the work of early-seventeenth-century collectors of English Renaissance poetry in manuscript. The verse miscellanies, or poetry anthologies, of these collectors have long attracted the attention of literary editors looking for texts by individual, major authors, and they have more recently interested historians for their poems on affairs of state, called verse libels. By contrast, this book investigates the relationships that the compilers of miscellanies established between such presumably literary and political texts. It focuses on two of the most popular, and least printable, literary genres that they collected: libels, and anti-courtly love poetry, a literary mode that the collectors of John Donne's poems played a major role in establishing. They made Donne the most popular poet in manuscripts of the period, and they demonstrated a special affinity for his most erotic or obscene poems, such as 'To his Mistress going to bed' and 'The Anagram'. Donne collectors also exhibited the similarities between these Ovidian love elegies and the sexually explicit or counter-Petrarchan verse of other authors, thereby organizing a literary genre opposed to the conventions of courtly love lyrics. Furthermore, collectors politicized this genre by relating examples of it to libels. In so doing, manuscript verse collectors demonstrated a type of literary and political activity distinct from that of authors, stationers, and readers. Based on a thorough investigation of manuscript verse miscellanies, the book appeals to scholars and students of early modern English literature and history, Donne studies, manuscript studies, and the history of the book.

Book Description
Our Forever Angel pulls no punches with its candor. Author Barb Scholz openly shares stories about how she and her children survived their loss of husband-father, Troy, to suicide. By disclosing what she has learned, this book will help others through their experience with suicide. In addition to personal experiences, a wealth of information is included from a counseling perspective. A veteran professor of thirty-two years, in the counseling department at the University of Nebraska Omaha, reviewed the work of the author and contributions were given from a clinical perspective. The combination of personal stories and clinical information makes this book more useful than any book containing either of these without the other. The clinical information is based on years of research, and the personal stories make it real. A few topics covered are: answering the question why; allowing yourself to be happy again; helping your kids get through it; suicide happens to "normal" families; how faith can help; and choosing to become stronger rather than letting it consume you. Our Forever Angel offers empathy and hope, tugging readers to new heights of understanding, and encouraging survivors to rebuild lives and put the past where it rightfully belongs: behind them.
