Book Description
Excerpt from Napoleon as a General, Vol. 1 Colonel count Yoc von wartenburg of the Prussian General Staff was well known in his own country as one of the most rising men in the German Army. His untimely death in China from suffocation due to a charcoal stove in an unventilated room has deprived the service of which he was SO brilliant a member of one who was admittedly destined for a high career. The work of which this translation is Offered to the British Army shows that he was a most capable military historian, an able and penetrating critic. For training in strategy no better field can be found than the study of the campaigns of the Great Emperor. Count Yorck von Wartenburg has produced a work which in a Comparatively small space deals in a comprehensive way with them. NO such book existed in English, and I have thought it well to include it in the Wolseley Series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte, Vol. 1 A celebrated soothsayer was recommended to Bonaparte by the inhabitants of Cairo, who confidentially vouched for the ac curacy with which he could fortel future events. He was sent for, and when he arrived, I, Venture, and a sheik, were with the general. The prophet wished first to exercise his skill upon Bonaparte; who, however, proposed that I should have my for tune told first, to which I acceded without hesitation. To afford an idea of his prophetic skill, I must mention, that since my arrival in Cairo, I had been in a very weak state. The passage of the Nile, and the bad food we had had for twelve days, had greatly reduced me, so that I was miserably pale and thin. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon I, Vol. 1: Including New Materials From the British Official Records An apology seems to be called for from anyone who gives to the world a new Life of Napoleon I. My excuse must be that for many years I have sought to revise the traditional story of his career in the light of facts gleaned from the British Archives and of the many valuable materials that have recently been published by continental historians. To explain my manner of dealing with these sources would require an elaborate critical Introduction; but, as the limits of my space absolutely preclude any such attempt, I can only briefly refer to the most important topics. To deal with the published sources first, I would name as of chief importance the works of MM. Aulard, Chuquet, Houssaye, Sorel, and Vandal in France; of Herren Beer, Delbruck, Fournier, Lehmann, Oncken, and Wertheimer in Germany and Austria; and of Baron Lumbroso in Italy. I have also profited largely by the scholarly monographs or collections of documents due to the labours of the "Societe d'Histoire Contemporaine," the General Staff of the French Army, of MM. Bouvier, Caudrillier, Capitaine "J. G." Levy, Madelin, Sagnac, Sciout, Zivy, and others in France; and of Herren Bailleu, Demelitsch, Hansing, Klinkowstrom, Luckwaldt, Ulmann, and others in Germany. Some of the recently published French Memoirs dealing with those times are not devoid of value, though this class of literature is to be used with caution. Book Description
Excerpt from Napoleon as a General, Vol. 2 The favourable reception given to my bold attempt to criticize Napoleon's strategical conceptions has served as a stimulus to me to complete the second part, which was indeed already far advanced despite of many difficulties which had to be encountered. I hope the reading public may give the same reception to this, the concluding portion. For the early appearance of the volume my thanks are due to Lieutenant v. Kameke, Of the Emperor Alexander's Grenadier Guard Regiment, who has taken the trouble to draw the map of the Russian theatre of war. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, Emperor of the French, Vol. 1 of 3: With a Preliminary View of the French Revolution On the execution of his task, it becomes the author to be si lent. He is aware it must exhibit many faults; but he claims credit for having brought to the undertaking a mind disposed to do his subject as impartial justice as his judgment could sup ply. He will be found no enemy to the person of Napoleon. The term of hostility is ended when the battle has been won, and the foe exists no longer. His splendid personal qualities his great military actions and political services to France, will not, it is hoped, be found lessened in the narrative. Unhap pily, the author's task involved a duty of another kind, the discharge of which is due tod'ranee, to Britain, to Europe, and to the world. If the general system of Napoleon has rest ed upon force or fraudfit is neither the greatness of his talents, nor the success of his undertakings, that ought to stifle the voice or dazzle the eyes of him who adventures to be his histo rian. The reasons, however, are carefully summed up where the author has presumed to express a favourable or unfavour able opinion of the distinguished person of whom these vo lumes treat; so that each reader may judge of their validity for himself. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of the Emperor Napoleon, Vol. 1: With an Appendix, Containing an Examination of Sir of Scott's Life of Napoleon Bonaparte; And a Notice of the Principal Errors of Other Writers, Respecting His Character and Conduct Again, if it shall be found that the scheme of the great novelist embraced such misre presentations as he could decently repeat or plausibly imagine, their correction will counteract, in its most imposing form, and by a single Operation, a diversified mass of historical falsehood, and establish in the reader's mind, various and important truths. It is observed by Lord Bacon, that the enquiry of truth, which is the wooing of it, the knowledge of truth, which is the presence of it and the belief of truth, which is the enjoying of it, is the sovereign good of human nature.
