This relevant vision adds a different view to the studies on Reinaldo Arenas, and makes possible to categorize the work of the Cuban narrator as Postmodern and authentically revolutionary. in the last decades have omitted all references to the fact that it does not reflect the reality of a Postmodern culture, pointing out, very rightly so, that there is a reason for this omission: the political project of the Cuban revolution... has nothing in common with the Postmodern sensitivity -heterogeneous, pluralist, relativist, antiauthoritarian. This study demonstrates a sound knowledge of the concepts that define the Postmodern thought, and its applications to Arenas' writings reveal the transcendence of this author in contemporary Cuban narrative. This is an aspect that gives Zendegui's study a fundamental importance in the new approaches to the novelist's works. The texts chosen for the study of Ileana Zendegui offer a forceful and tragic vision of Cuban reality, unmasking the images of terror and alienation, of loneliness and oppression, of madness and death, and the desperate search for freedom, love and true human solidarity. command and usage of primary and secondary sources, bringing to the reader an understanding of the existential reality of human beings immersed into an ideological model that has made the dehumanization of man and the apocalypse its reason for existing. One of the most important contributions of this work to the study of Cuban narrative is the distinction that for the first time is established between the concept of lo real maravilloso, with Alejo Carpentier as its most renowned representative, and what the author identifies as lo irreal espantoso, a vision symbolized by Reinaldo Arenas. On defining Cuban experience as the antipode of Alejo Carpentier's vision, Zendegui demystifies, demythologizes, an escapist perception that has never had any relation with the hallucinating and tragic Cuban reality. The desolation and disintegration of a world rotten by its own contradictions, finds in Arenas' writings a powerful, expansive force, unknown until then in Cuban literature. Ileana Zendegui's study brings this out brilliantly. relation between Reinaldo Arenas' poem El Central, and Jose Marti's El presidio politico. Zendegui affirms that Arenas' text could be considered an extension, both at the ideological and thematic levels of that of Marti's. The premises established by Roland Barthes in relation to the concept of re-presentation, underlined by Jacques Derrida's vision on the act of reading, give Zendegui an opportunity to explore two texts that although separated by time are nonetheless very consequent in their intentionality and ethicity. It is surprising the similarity that even with their established differences the two texts have in common, making the reader aware of the ingrained vocation for freedom -not different from that of Jose Marti- that becomes the sediment of Arenas' writings. Ileana Zendegui's book is a relevant text in the bibliography on Reinaldo Arenas. who, with a transcending humanist and ethical vision, has left as a legacy a powerful sense of commitment in the struggle for affirming the will to be ourselves against the monsters of our time. This study deals with the experience of exile in the works of three Spanish American writers: The Cuban authors Reinaldo Arenas and Manuel Diaz Martinez, as well as the Uruguayan author Fernando Ainsa. Along with the reshaping of territories, and socio-economic and cultural dimensions which took place on a worldwide scale, the last few decades have also witnessed a reshaping of the spectrum and voices of Latin-American writers that create, revisit and suffer the complex and multifaceted phenomenon of exile. The displaced subject, or rather, the voices of the displaced, the marginalized and the excluded rise up from a fringe that, for various reasons or motives, will always represent a place that lies beyond the borders -imaginary or real- of the spatial, political, cultural, linguistic and sexual communities to which they subscribe. And, these voices, regardless of the grouping to which they belong and the choices on which they base the necessity or purpose of their expressive survival, map out a work that, while being personal in its origins, speaks to a more general context. exile and about exile, provided that we draw a distinction between these two facets (to the extent that it is possible) by having regard to thematic nuances and gradations that give substance to the journeys that mould diatopic variations in the discourses of the uprooted. And, it is necessary to speak in plural because, beyond the characteristics or common motives of nationalities and the political fortunes that have left their mark on entire generations of exiles, exile as a phenomenon responds to the rootlessness in itself, the blank spaces and the lack of linguistic, affective and cultural continuity, with strategies, identity masks and tactics for representation and resistance that infuse each of these idiosyncratic discourses. Hence its originality and intrinsic solitude, hence its penitence, and hence also its familiar and irreplaceable expressive uniqueness. It does not take much reflection to conclude that Latin-American literature has and continues to emanate predominantly from internal or territorial exiles. historiography of Latin America, tower above the founding moments and extend far beyond the consolidation of the nation states. Think of a work such as El Facundo by the Argentine writer, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, written in the style of a political pamphlet in an attempt to justify the ostracism that the author suffered, thereby initiating, in more ways than one, the narrative of the American subcontinent and its peculiar combination of genres. Think also of the journeys of Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral and Julio Cortazar, amongst other intellectuals, not to mention the vast list of travellers in the 19th century who set out to explore large parts of the American and European continents, travelling as far as the Middle East; or, exile in reverse, experiencing its destabilising face, stirred up by the cultural agendas projected onto the literary establishment by the ruling elites, as occurred in the Rio de la Plata towards the end of the last century. the demands that stem from violence and the devastating side-effects of globalisation, has transformed the Latin America of our day into a continent of emigration. And, it is a fact that those aspects which shape the identity of the field of literature have had to undergo significant short-term and long-term reassessments in order to assimilate new cultural centres of gravity and heterogonous cultural elements. The work presented here by Jose Ismael Gutierrez shares a similar concern, namely the need for research, which for some time has been enriching the Latin-American literary bibliography in these parts, as never before. However, careful consideration reveals that this study is linked to one of the essential discursive categories of the literary phenomenon in the history of our literature, namely territorial displacement as a system, involuntary displacement and the stigma of exclusion. The author possesses an ample theoretical and historic background for his research of some of the many figures that serve as conduits for the writings of exiles on Latin-American soil. assessments are alternated with points of view drawn from sociology, politics, philosophy, psychology and culture in general. This studious Spaniard, with his keen observations, demonstrates his profound knowledge of the various periods in the literature of the New World, having previously sufficiently proven his command of the field with an exceptional list of academic essays and articles on the 19th and 20th century, which were published in these latitudes. Such experience and scholarship seem to me to be a necessary condition for understanding the evolution of the literature and culture of Latin America from its roots and also from a global perspective, in other words, without restricting one's point of view to regional or generational phenomena, which though interesting, are but of limited importance. which Professor Gutierrez devotes the following three sections -the Cuban authors, Reinaldo Arenas and Manuel Diaz Martinez, as well as the Uruguayan author, Fernando Ainsa- and the unusual manner in which their respective contributions are presented -each one from certain historic-cultural coordinates and from an own interpretative angle- extend a forceful and novel invitation to the reader, whose intelligence and aesthetic sensibilities will engaged while being guided, page after page, along the various experiences of certain concrete, real-life exiles, whose experiences are physical, external and geographical, while at the same time being internal and spiritual. Reinaldo Arenas Fuentes (1943-1990) was a novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, and short story writer considered by many as one of the most eloquent and daring literary figures of his generation. Some of his most known works include the five novel series known as the Pentagony (Pentagona): Celestino antes del alba, El palacio de las blanqusimas mofetas, Otra vez el mar, El color del verano o el jardn de las delicias, and El as alto. Other literary works by Arenas include El central, Voluntad de vivir manifestndose, La vieja Rosa, Arturo, la estrella ms brillante, El mundo alucinante, Adios a mam, Antes que anochezca: una autobiografa and his one act plays Persecucin: cinco piezas de teatro experimental. The themes he explored in his writing ran counter to what Fidel Castro and the revolutionary regime expected from its intellectual citizens. While Castro wanted everyone that wished to be published on the island to succumb to the ideals of the revolution, to promote them in their works, Arenas refused because he believed in the artistic freedom of expression. While he began his adolescence in support of the rebels that were fighting against Fulgencio Batista's dictatorship, he began attacking the revolution when the institutionalized persecution of homosexuals began in Cuba. The research that has been done on Reinaldo Arenas has often focused on his sexuality and his opposition to the revolution. Hundreds of articles have dealt with either specific literary works or themes present in his writing, either using Queer Theory or more traditional literary analysis. However, none have focused on the idea that Arenas could be considered a postcolonial writer since there is a question as to whether that particular theoretical approach can be applied to that region. A study of the relationship between a writer such as Arenas, who refused to conform to the idea that the individual had to become part of a larger collective, and the iconic image of Caliban as he has been appropriated by many Latin American scholars and activists, is necessary to understand the conditions under which many marginalized groups lived whether we are referring to Cuba or any other Latin American country. This is the first critical study of Reinaldo Arenas from a postcolonial venue. It seeks to find the commonalities that exist between Arenas and the image of Caliban which first appeared in William Shakespeare's The Tempest. The focus is to show how the appropriation of this seventeenth-century image of the New World native can be used to understand the goals of Arenas' writing: to counter attack the regime's goals and false promises which fueled his desire to create a literary counter-discourse that promoted freedom of expression and assertion of an identity separate from that expected by Cuban revolutionary society. Arenas' characters represent imperialistic influences in Cuba that opposed the regime's demands upon expected literary support of their agenda: not only because his characters could be interpreted as a form of mimesis of the treatment various individuals endured on the island, but also because Arenas' messages opposed the ideals of the Revolution. As homosexuality became marginalized and discrimination of homosexuals became institutionalized, Arenas' writing transgressed the expected silence by graphically describing his life, and particularly his sexual adventures and voracity. At the same time, his writings reflect a search for his identity and authorial voice. The arguments in this book focus on a discussion of Reinaldo Arenas' struggle against censorship focused precisely on reestablishing the individual the regime hopes to reeducate. The author's motivations for interpolating his writing at the root of the very society that denies him an existence can be equated to postcolonial discourse. This book is of interest to areas such as Latin American studies and postcolonial studies.
