Book Description
Excerpt from Outline of a Course of Lectures on Human Physiology This little book contains an outline of two short Courses of Lectures on Human Physiology delivered to many thousands of persons at large towns in the North of England and the Midlands, and also in the Metropolis. It embodies an attempt I have made to excite an interest in, and give some sound elementary knowledge of, a branch of science which surpasses all others in its practical bearing upon the maintenance and improvement of the health of the community. It is not intended as a text-book, but as an adjunct to the Lecture-room Although written chiefly to help the -numerous students who attend my own Lectures, it may also possibly prove of service to medical and other students who are engaged in attending Lectures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Human Physiology The living body contains no other elements and forces than those found in the inanimate world. There is no special Vital Force. The properties of life are dependent upon the chemical and physical properties of the living sub stance. The composition of this substance is not known; in fact, it is a question whether it is chemically an indi vidual substance or a mixture of different bodies. An Introduction to Human Physiology (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Augustus D. Waller

Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to Human Physiology I have written this book with a distinct consciousness that physiology in a medical school is, in conjunction with anatomy, the introduction to medicine and to surgery of those who will engage in 'general practice, ' and I hope that the volume may be found to justify its title of 'Human Physiology' with reference to the position which the subject should occupy in medical education, as the junction to which anatomy, chemistry, and physics converge, and from which the principles of medicine and of surgery diverge. Physiology does not consist in a knowledge of recondite phenomena, of difficult names, and of complicated instruments. It should fundamentally consist in the living mental picture of what the great organs below a mans skin are like, what they are doing, how they can be examined, what happens when they are not working properly, how their actions hang together, how they may be influenced for good and for evil. But physiology, as it is written, contains more than this, and, in sparing measure, it is well that the 'Institutes of Medicine' should not be restricted to the visibly 'useful, ' or to the obviously 'utilisable.' Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Human Physiology Among the students of medicine there exists a need for an outline of human physiology which contains its most important facts in a concise form and gives the beginner a clear view of the entire field. It is true, such manuals exist - those of Oestrcich, Breitenstein, Schmidt, Peter, etc. - but as these contain many errors, they can hardly be regarded as aids to the student, although in general use. For this reason it appeared advisable to publish this manual. In regard to the arrangement of the material, we believe that we have not deviated to any great extent from the old and tried system. Our object has been to lay stress upon the undisputed facts, while we have not entered into the discussion of various unsettled questions. Yet in some instances we were compelled to mention the various hypotheses at present advanced. The physiological methods are dealt with very briefly and often merely indicated by a few words, as it was not our intention to give elaborate descriptions of methods and apparatus. Moreover, by a shorter presentation of the methods the erroneous notion might be called forth that but little is necessary to understand it. Hence a mere allusion seems preferable, so that the student shall realize that this manual does not contain all that he needs to know, but that it gives only a survey of the general field of physiology and cannot take the place of lectures and larger text-books. Most of the illustrations of this book arc copies of figures found in well-known text-books and original papers. Book Description
Excerpt from Physiology Preliminary Course Lectures I have endeavored in the delivery of these lectures to put within the reach and comprehension Of the first course student the foundation facts and princi ples upon which the stately edifice of physiology is built. And in the publication of them, which I have only presumed to venture in consequence of repeated requests on the part of the students of my class, I have adhered strictly to the Spirit, and as far as I could, to the letter of the delivery. This explanation will suffice, I hope, to excuse the latitude of expres sion and selection which would be accorded to off hand, lecture-room, delivery, and which might be inexcusable in a text-book compiled for the more careful study of leisure hours. Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Physiology IN revising this work my aim has been to fulfill the original purpose of the book in so far as possible. Dr. Jones said in the preface to the first edition This volume has been prepared with a view of presenting, in as convenient form as possible, the essential facts of modern physiology as related to the practice of medicine. This object has been kept in mind in the preparation of the third edition. In this edition the Introduction, the chapters on The Cell, The Elementary Tissues and on the Blood have been entirely rewritten and new illustrations added. A new chapter, with illustrations, on The Physiological Characteristics of Muscle, has been added. The chapter on Secretion has been rearranged. New subject matter has been added to the chapter on The Physiology of Digestion and Absorption. Other minor changes have been made throughout the book where such were deemed advisable. Especial acknowledgment is due to Dr. Robert G. Stephens for his valuable work in preparing the second edition. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physiology Tma high reputation acquired, on both sides of the Atlantic, by Dr. Foster's text-book of Physiology as a lucid exposition of the science in its most modern aspect, has seemed to call for an edition more thor oughly adapted to the wants of the American student. The plan of the author has presupposed an acquaint ance with the details of physiological anatomy, such as the student is accustomed to look for in his trea tises on physiology. The absence of these details has rendered many parts of the work vague, if not altogether incomprehensible, and has therefore proved a serious drawback to the usefulness of the book as an accompaniment to lectures on physiology as it is usu all y taught in our schools, and this deficiency the editor has endeavored to supply by brief notes and the intro duction of a large number of illustrations.
