Book Description
THE STORIES: CAMBERWELL HOUSE by Amelia Roper. Elderly neighbors Annie and Olive have been friends since they were children. At twenty, they agreed to "knock each other off" if they were still alive at seventy-five. Now they are seventy-five and one of them has changed her mind. A tale of old age, murder, and ginger nut biscuits. (1 woman.) THE CLOSET by Aoise Stratford. Kevin's dad has thrown his favorite toy, Bart Sponge, into the back of a closet. There, Bart meets a toy dinosaur and another toy he can't even begin to identify. Does a supposedly gay toy have a chance of making it out of the closet? (2 men, 1 woman or man.) CLOSING COSTS by Arlene Hutton. After viewing four hundred apartments, has Harris finally found the right co-op, or simply the right real estate agent—Alice? Harris must decide if it's time to trade in his artificial fish—and finally grow up. (1 man, 1 woman.) FREEFALLING by Aurin Squire. Two passengers and a stewardess on a falling plane give their moment-by-moment account of what happens when tomorrow is no longer certain. (2 men, 1 woman.) POISON by John Patrick Shanley. Kenny has seen the depths of Kelly's self-hatred, and he'll never date her again—unless he drinks a fortune-teller's mysterious potion, which will kill his soul as dead as Kelly's. Can Kelly convince him to drink the potion? Can she convince herself? (1 man, 2 women.) SELF-TORTURE AND STRENUOUS EXERCISE by Harry Kondoleon. Carl tells Alvin that he's in love with another woman. "Good for you," says Alvin, who refuses to accept that Carl's, Adel, wife only attempted suicide—she's still alive. The woman Carl loves is Alvin's wife, Beth. But right now, Beth is so drunk she can't get up off the floor, much less run off with Carl, and Adel comes in with bandaged wrists saying Carl has been trying to kill her. These four have some issues to work out. (2 men, 2 women.) A SINGULAR KINDA GUY by David Ives. Mitch is a young guy talking to a girl in a bar. She's nice, but he's got this sort of confession, see. There's something she ought to know—on the inside, he isn't really a guy at all. He's an Olivetti electric self-correcting typewriter. (1 man.) SOMETHING FROM NOTHING by David Riedy. A stranger's intimate gesture on a New York subway causes a couple to reexamine their relationship, and it causes one person to get punched in the face. Told from all three characters' wildly different perspectives. (2 men, 1 woman.) THERE'S NO HERE HERE by Craig Pospisil. Lance moves to Paris to follow his dream of becoming a writer, but his work goes badly. As does his relationship with Juliette, a beautiful Parisian. But a strangely familiar woman at their local bistro forces Lance to dig deeper into himself. (2 men, 2 women.) YOU HAVE ARRIVED by Rob Ackerman. Dan and Kristin are navigating their first date, and fortunately, the other woman with them knows the way through the confusion into Brooklyn. That would be Cyndi, the GPS system in Dan's car. (1 man, 2 women.)

Book Description
52ND TO BOWERY TO COBBLE HILL, IN BROOKLYN by Chiara Atik. Halle hails a taxi after a party, when Alison, her aggressively bubbly friend, pushes into the cab too. It’s clear Halle didn’t want to ride with her, but she puts up with it until Alison asks if she’s mad at her, so Halle comes right out and tells her “I just don’t like you very much.” (2 women.) ANNIVERSARY SEASON by Jenny Lyn Bader. Zoe and Matt got married during hurricane season, and each year when their anniversary rolls around they seem to battle each other or prepare for another storm. Will their marriage last? Will they remember their anniversary? Will the power be knocked out again? (1 man, 1 woman.) CAPTURING THE FORT by Arlene Hutton. Carrie and Michael are US Marines on security duty in a desert war zone. They would seem to have little in common. Michael seems to be “one of the boys,” and Carrie is married with a husband back home. But with little to do but talk, these two soldiers begin to connect. (1 man, 1 woman.) CARRIE & FRANCINE by Ruby Rae Spiegel. Carrie, 13, asks her friend Francine to help her get ready for a make-out session at a bar mitzvah. Having seen too many Girls Gone Wild videos, Carrie thinks she’s the right age to go wild herself. These girls can be cruel and talk like truck drivers, but there’s an odd innocence to them as well. And somehow, they may be okay in the end. (3 women.) DISSONANCE by Craig Pospisil. Tricia returns to the Berkshires to deal with her mother’s death following a battle with Alzheimer’s, but at the funeral home she collides with Fitz, a prodigy and former piano student of her mother’s, with secrets of his own, who challenges her choices. (1 man, 1 woman.) INTO YOU by Lee Blessing. A week after being drugged and raped at a frat party, Molly brings home a drunken man from another party. She doesn’t know him. She doesn’t know who raped her. But she plans to exact her revenge on him. (1 man, 3 women.) MERCURY IS PERPETUALLY IN RETROGRADE SO STOP WORRYING ABOUT IT by Kara Lee Corthron. Polly’s life is great. Her mother just sent her two tickets to Wicked. What could go wrong? Then her boyfriend breaks up with her. And her best friend does too. And her mother changes her phone number. And that’s just the start of things… (1 man, 3 women.) NAPOLEON IN EXILE by Daniel Reitz. A single mother, sick with cancer, struggles to talk to her low-functioning twenty-five-year-old son with Asperger’s about how he might take care of himself when she’s gone. (1 man, 1 woman.) ON THE MENU by Rob Ackerman. A mother tries to talk to her fourteen-year-old daughter about sex before she goes off to culinary camp for the summer. The daughter—of course—wants nothing to do with this conversation. But her mother persists, until the daughter finds a way to turn the tables on her. (2 women.) RULES OF COMEDY by Patricia Cotter. Caroline is really, really not funny. Which is why she hires Guy, a stand-up comedian with some hang-ups of his own, to teach her how to tell jokes. But it turns out that they both have things to learn from one another, about life as well as laughter. (1 man, 1 woman.) A SWEET AND BITTER PROVIDENCE by Julia Jordan. Late at night, outside their father’s hospital room, Molly, Grace, and Lucy argue about which of them should tell their brother Sam to break up with “that girl” they can’t stand. It seems catty, but they love their brother and their family. And they may be right. (1 man, 3 women.)

Book Description
(Applause Books). Lose yourself in a universe of forces familiar and frightening in the 21 plays presented in this exclusive volume. The playwrights included here succeed in pushing back the boundaries of conventional dramatic expression. Among them, Lanford Wilson dissects a survivor's anguish after his lover's death in A Poster of the Cosmos and Deborah Pryor spins an eerie tale of spellbinding romance in The Love Talker . Richard Greenberg plots a battle of wills between a young writer and his elusive muse, while Sheila Walsh examines the exchange of a woman's soul for her husband's fame in Molly and James . From the starkly realistic to the fantastic, these plays challenge their audiences to confront the universal from a new perspective.

Book Description
(Best American Short Plays). "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." Really? Words can break spirits, destroy confidence. They can also build hope and incite great acts of heroism. Playwrights know this, and so do theater audiences. Otherwise, why go? Words matter and carry clout every bit as dangerous as a hammer or crowbar. This, too, playwrights know. The monologues in this volume are full of such blows, striking at our imaginations and our memories, generating responses such as joyful laughter or chilling surprise. Others squeeze us into worlds we've never experienced, or perhaps experienced at the furthest edges of memory and recollection. Still others may help us alter the way we see certain things, people, or beliefs. Best Monologues from The Best American Short Plays, Volume Three is a collection of monologues drawn from the popular Best American Short Plays series, an archive of works from many of the best playwrights active today. Long or short, serious or not, excerpts or entireties, this collection abounds in speech acts that may trigger physical reactions and almost certainly will transform an attitude or two, drawing out lost memories, creating new ones, and definitely entertaining, engaging, amusing us all along the way.
