Tommy at War

Tommy at War PDF Author: John Sadler
Publisher: Biteback Publishing
ISBN: 1849546096
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War, arguably the definitive conflict in the history of Europe. Never before or since has such a great swell of popular sentiment produced such a patriotic rush to arms. In the trenches and on the battlefield, British soldiers united with their allies to fight valiantly for the cause. At very great cost, they delivered Western Europe from a new Dark Age. Providing a vital insight into this pivotal period, historians John Sadler and Rosie Serdiville disclose the poignant and emotive experiences of war, in the front line and behind, from men and women of every class and background. Combining rich anecdote and unique testimony, the stories of those that passed through the ordeal of war reveal remarkable tales of horror and suffering, but also the comradeship, exhilaration and adventure of the Western Front. This is the human story of the Great War, told by those who lived through it.

Teenage Tommy

Teenage Tommy PDF Author: Richard van Emden
Publisher: Casemate Publishers
ISBN: 1473821754
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 335

Book Description
Benjamin Clouting was just sixteen years old when he embarked with the British Expeditionary Force for France in August 1914. The youngest man in the 4th Dragoon Guards, he took part in the BEF's celebrated first action at Casteau on August 22nd, and, two days later, had his horse shot from under him during the famous cavalry charge of the 4th Dragoon Guards and the 9th Lancers at Audregnies. Ben served on the Western front during every major engagement of the war except Loos, was wounded twice, and in 1919 went with the Army of Occupation to Cologne. The son of a stable groom, Ben was brought up in the beautiful Sussex countryside near Lewes and from his earliest years was, as he often said himself, "crazy to be a soldier". He worked briefly as a stable boy before joining up in 1913; his training was barely completed when war broke out. The Regiment, knowing Ben to be under age, tried to stop him embarking for France, but he flatly refused to be left behind. During the next four years, he served under officers immortalized in Great War history, including Major Tom Bridges, Captain Hornby, and Lieutenant-Colonel Adrien Carton de Wiart VC.Teenage Tommy is a detailed account of a trooper's life at the front, vividly recalling, for example, the privations suffered during the retreat from Mons. and later, the desperate fighting to hold back the German onslaught at 2nd Ypres. But this is more than just a memoir about trench warfare. Ben's lively sense of humor and healthy disrespect for petty restrictions make this an entertaining as well as a moving story of life at the front.

Tommy Atkins

Tommy Atkins PDF Author: John Laffin
Publisher: The History Press
ISBN: 0752466941
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
Tommy Atkins is the English soldier, who joking broke the cavalry of France at Minden, who singing marched with the Great Duke to the Danube, who grumbling shattered Napoleon's dreams at Waterloo, who sweating in his red coat tramped back and forth across Indis, who kept his six-rounds-to-the-minute at Mons, and who died in the mud at Passchendaele, the sands of the Western Desert, and the jungles of Burma. If his name has been eclipsed by his more illustrious commanders - Cromwell, Marlborough, Moore, Wolfe, Wellington, Allenby, Slim - they at least will accord him his rightful place beside them. They knew his worth. Tommy Atkins is his story - the story of this most versatile, most adaptable, most unmilitary soldier.

Tommy Malboeuf

Tommy Malboeuf PDF Author: Lewis M. Stern
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476646627
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
Adopted as a child from the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, Tommy Malboeuf grew up in Troutman, North Carolina before enlisting in the Navy in the early 1950s. After his military service, Tommy found occasional work surveying and operating heavy equipment, and he also found a personal passion in bluegrass fiddling. He performed and recorded with A.L. Wood and the Smokey Ridge Boys, Roy McMillan's High Country Boys, the Border Mountain Boys, L.W. Lambert and the Blue River Boys, C.E. Ward and his band, Garland Shuping, and Wild Country, among others. In the late 1990s, Tommy began teaching fiddle, maintaining a steady stream of students until at least the early 2000s. He continued to perform as a fiddler, filling in for a variety of local bands and recording cuts on records for bands such as Big Country Bluegrass. This text documents Tommy's life, from his humble beginnings to his lengthy fiddle career. Contextualizing Tommy's work within the Statesville-Troutman bluegrass "scene," chapters also explore the local bluegrass culture of the time. Tommy's extensive repertoire is also listed, including his spectacular fiddle contest wins, band recordings, local jam field recordings, and songs recorded for students, all of which highlight his talent and expertise as a fiddler.

“Ted and Tommy”

“Ted and Tommy” PDF Author: Graham Ewen Eagleton
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 150350302X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
Halt! Who goes there? Three times, with gun in hand, the old home guard fellow demanded an answer. I said I wanted to join the air force. I can remember him saying, “Are you sure you want to?” I suppose he felt a bit fatherly—you know: here was another young girl going into that terrible place! August 1939 and war clouds looming, May Cameron, “Tommy,” approached the Balloon Station near Birmingham, England, harbouring ideas of becoming an air ace. On the other side of the world in Sydney, Australia, Ted accompanied a workmate to night classes conducted by the Empire Air Training Scheme, half-expecting that if he were accepted into the air force, his previous job would have him typecast for ground crew. In the end, neither Tommy nor Ted got quite what they bargained for. But they did find each other and so took the first steps on another very different adventure. This is the story of Ted and Tommy, of their formative years, of their coming together in wartime Britain; Ted the Australian “flying officer or something” of 466 Squadron, and Tommy the Scottish lass in the control tower; and of the struggle they later came to share with fellow ex-servicemen to regain their lives and to raise a family in the changing circumstances of postwar Australia. This then is hagiography—a love story—the story of my parents, Ted and Tommy Eagleton, lest we forget!
