Book Description
Excerpt from The British Museum Library This essay traverses some of the ground covered by Edwards's Lives of tin: Founders of tile Brz'tzir/z Museum, and the Reading-room manuals of Sims and Nichols, all long out of print. But it has its own field, and adds a little here and there, I venture to hope, to the published history of our national library. It is not intended as a guide to the Reading room. Lists of some of the official catalogues and other publications that form so distinguished a part of the work of the British Museum are appended for the convenience of students in general. The bibliography indicates the main sources to which I am indebted for material. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Catalogue of Books Placed in the Galleries in the Reading Room of the British Museum The present collection is not to be regarded as a Library of Refer ence. The chief object in forming it has been to bring together in a convenient position the books in general demand, and thus to save time in supplying books to the readers. Many books therefore which would not otherwise have found a place in it have been included, because they were found to. He often asked for, and others because they form parts of collections, desirable as a Whole, from which it was impossible to separate them. Book Description
Excerpt from A Subject Index of the Modern Works Added to the Library of the British Museum in the Years 1891-1895 The first Subject Index of Modern Works added to the Library of the British Museum was published in 1886. It contained an Index of the books published in and after the year 1880 which had been acquired between January 1880 and August 1885. The second volume, issued in 1891, continued the work from September 1885 to the end of December 1890, while the present volume carries on the Index from January 1891 to the end of December 1895. The system of arrangement adopted in this volume follows as closely as possible that of the second Index, but as the latter will not necessarily be in the hands of those who may use the present work, it may be desirable to repeat here, almost verbatim, the explanations previously given. Book Description
Excerpt from List of the Books of Reference in the Reading Room of the British Museum The first edition of this List or Brief Catalogue of the Books of Reference in the Reading Room, consisting of nearly volumes, was published in 1859, the second in 1871. Since the latter date frequent improvements have been effected by the introduction of new works and of new editions, whenever these presented any advantage over those previously placed in the Room. For the present issue'a new Plan has been prepared, and a Postscript added to the original Preface of Mr. Winter Jones, in which the history of the Reading Room is continued to the present year. The Subject Index, which in former editions consisted solely of references to the names of authors, now gives the short-title and press-mark of every book indexed, and in its present greatly extended form it is hoped that it may be found useful to Readers. It should be stated that since the last edition of this List was issued a fresh selection has been made of nearly books constantly in demand, and that these have been placed in the Lower Gallery of the Reading Room, where they are at all times easily accessible to Readers. Many books which may be _missed from the Reference Library have, for various reasons, chiefly from considera tions of space, been placed in the Gallery, and neither collection can be regarded \as quite complete without the other. A Catalogue of the collection in the Lower Gallery, drawn up by the late Mr. G. W. Porter, by whom the books were selected, was published in 1880. Book Description
Excerpt from A Student's Guide to the Manuscripts of the British Museum With the opening of the eighteenth century we enter upon the period of unification and nationaliza tion. The first stages are the acceptance by the nation of the Cotton Library as a gift from Cotton's grandson, and the fuller recognition of a national interest in the Royal Library which gradually came about during the time that Richard Bentley combined the keepership of both libraries. The further stages were the purchase of the Harleian Collection formed by the first two Earls of Oxford, the acceptance of the bequest of Sir Hans Sloane's Collection, the definite gift of the Royal Library and the foundation of the British Museum in order to afford house-room and provide custody for the four collections in one building. The date of the Museum Act of Parliament is 1753, and that of the Opening of the building 1759. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Subject Index of the Modern Works, Added to the Library of the British Museum in the Years 1885-1890 IN the year 1886, a Subject Index of the Accessions of recently-published books added to the Library of the British Museum between January, 1880, and August, 1885, was issued. The present volume continues the work from September, 1885, to January, 1891, and contains an Index of the books published during the last ten years which have been added to the Library during the years 1886, 1887, 1888, and 1889, together with the greater part of those received in 1885 and 1890. Works in the Slavonic, Hungarian, Celtic and Oriental languages are not included in either volume. The primary object of the Index is to assist readers in their researches in the Library of the British Museum; it has not therefore been considered necessary to reproduce such portions of the General Catalogue of Printed Books as are of the nature of a Class Catalogue. Thus, the heading 'bible' will not be found in the present Index, although a considerable proportion of the Biblical literature of the last five years has been included, under such headings as Christianity, Church History, Jews, etc. For the same reason no personal names have been taken as subject headings, and the heading Biography' has been used only for collected biographies, although such individual biographies as serve to illustrate History, Art, or Science have been frequently included, and will be found through out the work under various subject headings. Novels, poems, plays, and miscellaneous essays are also omitted, and only critical or historical works and selections will be found under such headings as Drama, Fiction, Hymns and Poetry. It should also be noted that when several editions of a book have been published during the period included in the present series, reference has been made only to the latest edition.
