Book Description
Excerpt from The Causation and Prevention of Disease Reform for other than its legitimate objects: believing that if, after the adoption of measures ostensibly carried out for the prevention of the epidemic cholera, the disease should return and should prevail in a more aggravated form than before, which will probably be the case, it would be the means Of retarding, rather than promoting that cause, which I, in common with every well wisher of his species, have at heart. Book Description
Excerpt from Cause, Cure, and Prevention of Disease MY only object in the writing of this book is to tell what I know to be the truth. I have endeavored to make my criticism independent of my prejudices, understanding as I do that prejudice never knows the Value of a fact. While my criticism of the medical profession, and of all those engaged in the treatment of disease, may seem somewhat severe, yet I have said nothing that 1 have not myself verified. Here it may be well to state that in the medical profession there are many noble and useful men, whose gen ius and skill in surgery are only surpassed by their honest ambition to accomplish good. It has been my intention for Some time to write a book which, from my personal experience, I knew would be of great importance and benefit to the human race. Yet I know that upon this subject of disease much glistening eloquence has been squandered in the hope of personal gain. The Natural History of Cancer

The Natural History of Cancer PDF Author: William Roger Williams
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780265362877
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 540

Book Description
Excerpt from The Natural History of Cancer: With Special Reference to Its Causation and Prevention The subject of cancer has hitherto been investigated far too exclusively by the pursuit of details in ultimate analysis and hardly at all by the synthetical and comparative methods, which have been so profitably employed in other branches of biological research. As that fine pathologist Billroth has remarked Everything is too hurried nowadays. -we suffer from an insatiable craving for new - or apparently new - facts, in the hope of obtaining a possible sensational success. N 0 time is allowed to reflect upon, or to reconsider, the onward course of scientific inquiry. Where are we What have we left behind What is ahead Is it worth while to go farther in this direction or in that? Has detailed work given us a profitable knowledge of, or an insight into, the whole subject? No one finds time to answer such questions. In order that the immense stores of miscellaneous items of knowledge accumulated during the last half-century by dispersive analysis, may be profitably utilized for cancer research, concentration is above all things necessary for only thus can a higher plane of progress be attained. Moreover, since the cure of cancer altogether transcends present experience, I have in this work specially endeavoured to elucidate the causation and prevention of the disease rather than its cure for which, in my opinion, reliable indications are lacking. To this end I have devised and applied a new method of cancer research - Which may be called synthetic - whereby I have shown that there are modes of life, various habits and so forth, which tend to prevent the incidence of cancer almost entirely in healthy stocks, and greatly to reduce its ravages, even among those hereditarily predisposed. Such are the objects to which the present work is dedicated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Causation of Disease

The Causation of Disease PDF Author: Harry Campbell
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780267814091
Category : Science

Pages : 412

Book Description
Excerpt from The Causation of Disease: An Exposition of the Ultimate Factors Which Induce It In writing a work of this kind two courses are open to the author. One is to saturate himself with all the available litera ture on the subject, and, having done so, to connect into an intelligible whole the facts and opinions thus gleaned, adding, amending, and omitting as may seem fit. The other is for him to think the subject out independently from beginning to end, and to draw upon the resources of literature only just so far as apposite matter may chance to present itself in the ordinary course of his reading, or as his line of thought may from time to time suggest some special reference. I have adopted the latter course, not, indeed, from any preconceived plan, but rather from the force of circumstances, which led me in the first instance to think out the subjects here treated of for my own personal benefit. Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
Excerpt from Disease and Its Causes IN this little volume the author has endeavored to portray disease as life under conditions which differ from the usual. Life embraces much that is unknown and in so far as disease is a condition of living things it too presents many problems which are insoluble with our present knowledge. Fifty years ago the extent of the unknown, and at that time insoluble questions of disease, was much greater than at present, and the problems now are in many ways different from those in the past. No attempt has been made to simplify the subject by the presentation of theories as facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
