EU Electronic Communications Law

EU Electronic Communications Law PDF Author: Robert S. K. Bell

Pages : 0

Book Description
The liberalisation of the EU telecommunications markets, completed on 1 January 1998, created a strong European communications sector by promoting vigorous competition and innovation. The resulting revolutionary developments in technology and markets, necessitated a comprehensive review ofregulatory policy to cater for dynamic and largely unpredictable markets. The EU adopted a new common regulatory framework for electronic communications and services in 2002, which simplifies and consolidates previous legislation. The 'Framework Directive' contains common provisions that underlieseparate measures dealing with access and interconnection, authorisation, universal service and user's rights, data protection, local loop unbundling, harmonisation of use of the radio spectrum and competition issues.EU Electronic Communications Law provides comprehensive and expert analysis of the new regulatory framework, which covers all communications infrastructure and associated services: satellite networks, fixed and mobile terrestrial networks, cable TV networks, other networks used for radio andtelevision broadcasting, and services which control access to these services. It derives from a section in the looseleaf Law of the EU (Vaughan and Robertson, eds), and is made available here for the benefit of those who don't subscribe to the looseleaf.

Achieving the Internal Market for e-communications

Achieving the Internal Market for e-communications PDF Author: Andrea Renda
Publisher: CEPS
ISBN: 9290797932
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 72

Book Description
Over the past two years, the debate on the review of the EU regulatory framework for electronic communications has become hectic. After the European Commission adopted its proposed set of measures in November 2007, the European Parliament has shown an unprecedented interest in topics such as spectrum policy, functional separation of the incumbents' networks, the creation of a new European authority on telecoms, etc. After the successful experience of the first CEPS Task Force on "Policy Challenges for the Information Superhighway", which ended in June 2006, a new Task Force on "Achieving the Internal Market for e-communications" was launched by CEPS with the explicit aim to provide expertise to Members of the European Parliament in their reading of the proposed review. The Task Force was chaired by Magnus Lemmel, former Acting Director General at DG Enterprise, European Commission, and currently Senior Advisor at KREAB. This report summarises the results of the opinions that were expressed over five meetings, the last two of which took place inside the European Parliament. This highly influential report was drafted by Andrea Renda, Senior Research Fellow at CEPS.

The book explores in detail the dynamics of the complex relationship between technological and globalisation pressures, economic interests, and European and national policy responses. The authors also examine the achievements and limitations of over twenty years of EU efforts to liberalise markets and to harmonise regulation.
