Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 92: April 3, 1930 It is the Church of Christ, restored after centuries of apostasy, in fulfillment of the Lord's plan for human salvation. The doctrine of the Church is the Gospel as taught, in its full ness, by the Lord Jesus Christ, with nothing added, nothing taken away; its organization is patterned after the primitive Church; its ordinances, those divinely required to enter the Kingdom of God; its authority, that of the everlasting, holy Priesthood. The purpose of the Church is to bring the light of truth to humanity; its message, one of love and good will among all mankind; its promise, the life-giving gifts of the Gospel; its eager striving, to help all who are in distress of body or soul. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 92: June 26, 1930 The action of the Saints has been of the most pacific kind, remembering that God has said, Vengeance is mine I will repay. For further particulars we refer you to the statements of Messrs. Reid and Woods, and other statements in the Nauroo Neighbor which we send with this. And now, beloved brethren, we say to you all, as we say to the Saints here, be still and know that God reigns. This is one of those fiery trials that is to try the Saints of the last days. These servants of God have gone to heaven by fire, the fire of an ungodly mob. Like the prophets of ancient days, they lived as long as the world would receive them and this is one furnace in which the Saints are to be tried: To have their leaders cut off from their midst, and not be permitted to avenge their blood. God has said vengeance is mine; I have not called mine elders to fight their battles; I will fight their battles for them; and we know assuredly that He will do it in His own due time, and we have only to wait in patience and prayer the fulfilment of promise. This event is one of the most foul and damnable that ever disgraced the earth - having no parallel in time. Innocent men imprisoned without law, without justice, and murdered in cold blood in the enlightened nineteenth century, in an enlightened country, in the open daylight! It will call down the wrath and indignation of all nations upon the perpetrators of the horrid deed, and will prove the truth of the saying, the blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church. They died for the word of God, and the testimony of Jesus Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 92: July 10, 1930 A sacrament meeting should be held every Sunday in every branch. This is in full accord with the teachings of the Saviour, the revelations to the Prophet Joseph Smith, and the present practice as authorized and requested by the present presiding authorities of the Church. It is permissible, for the sake of the children, to administer the Sacrament in Sunday School, but this does not remove the necessity for regular Sunday Sacrament meeting. There is no harm done if the members of the Sunday School who also attend the Sacrament meeting, partake of the Sacrament twice in one day. The prayer of consecration, received by divine revelation, does not in any manner prevent a person from partaking of the Sacrament more than once on the same day. The Sunday Sacrament meeting should be held at a time most convenient for the members, usually in the evening. In a few branches, three Sunday meetings are held Sunday School in the morning, Sacrament meeting in the afternoon and a general meeting in the evening. Tere only Sunday School and one meeting are held, the latter becomes the Sacrament meeting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 92: October 2, 1930 We believe that all men are bound to sustain and uphold the respective governments in which they reside, while protected in their inherent and inalienable rights by the laws of such governments; and that sedition and rebellion are unbecoming every citizen thus protected, and should be punished accordingly; and that all governments have a right to enact such laws as in their own judgments are best calculated to secure the public interest; at the same time, however, holding sacred the freedom of conscience. Douglas said 'mormons' are bound by horrible oaths and terrible penalties to recognize and maintain the authority of Brigham Young as paramount to that of the United States.' This is another absolute falsehood. Brigham Young and all the leaders of this Church have taught from the day the Church was organized that the men who wrote the Constitution of the United States were inspired of the living God. Douglas also said: And that they expect ultimately to sub vert the government of the United States to that of Brigham Young - which is a falsehood. That this alien government of Brigham Young is forming alliance with the Indian tribes, in citing them to hostility, and organizing bands of Danites, or destroying angels, all of which is false. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 92: March 13, 1930 It would be inspiring if every man under the sound of my voice who has been on a mission were to stand up. It would be sur prising to see the number who have, at their own expense, gone many of them to the ends of the earth - to preach this Gospel, and to bear their humble testimonies. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 92: June 19, 1930 Mobs were raging, not only about Kirtland, but in Missouri also their murderous hate was manifest. Some of the brethren were tarred and feathered. W. W. Phelps wrote from Clay County Our clothes are worn out; we want the necessaries of life, and shall we lease, buy, or otherwise obtain land where we are, to till that we may raise enough to eat? Weary men who had toiled long hours with hammer, saw or trowel, when a rifle had seemed more necessary, were obliged to guard by night the work which had been accomplished so pain fully by day, that it should not be destroyed by malicious enemies. George A. Smith hauled the first load of stone for the Kirtland temple on June 5th, 1833, and on the same day Hyrum Smith and Reynolds Cahoon commenced excavating for the foundation, a labour which they finished with their own hands. Remember, the Church was then but three years old, scarcely out of its swaddling clothes, and the possessions of its members consisted almost solely of an unconquerable determination, inspired by faith, to accomplish the work designed to prepare mankind for the coming of the Lord. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 92: April 10, 1930 In songs of praise the Psalmist declared His. Coming. III ecstasy the Prophet Isaiah looked forward to the day when He would manifest Himself among men, and, by foreknowledge which came from the Father, announced the details of His death and the dire consequences of His crucifixion. The Redeemer Himself declared, notwithstanding the apparent failure Of His mission and ministry as it applied to the generation to which He brought the message Of salvation, that at a period of time then in the remote future, a period designated as the latter days, the Dispensation Of the Fulness of Times, He would again reveal Himself, would re-establish His Church upon earth, and come to reign in triumph and majesty over His people. In humility. And with full consciousness of the responsibility involved, we bear witness to the people of the world that with the appearance of the Father and the Son to the Prophet Joseph Smith, in the early spring Of 1820, the greatest Gospel dispensa tion of all time was ushered in, a dispensation of light, radiating from the presence Of God, illuminating the minds Of men, increasing intelligence and knowledge, which is the glory Of God, and by the application Of which the past one hundred years have been made the Miracle Century Of the ages. The increase of scientific knowledge, invention, industrial development; the harnessing of the forces Of the universe and adapting them to the comfort and convenience Of man, have reached a degree of perfection not dreamed of by people who lived when the past century was ushered in. In 1830 Abraham Lincoln attained his majority. He was still pursuing his studies by the light of a tallow dip, or pine knot, because there was nothing better to be had; and it was under these circumstances that he prepared himself to become the fore most citizen Of his country, thirty years later.
