On the 18th of July, 1879, His Holiness Pope Leo XIII. signed the decree for the introduction of the cause of the Beatification of the Foundress of the Sacred Heart, and allowed her to be called Venerable, thus authorizing the spontaneous homage paid her by many of the faithful and encouraging the hope that her sanctity will be one day attested by the infallible voice of the Church, and the name of Sophie Barat, the daughter of the vine-dresser of Joigny, numbered amongst those of the saints who in every age have done great things for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.
