Language Down the Garden Path

Language Down the Garden Path PDF Author: Montserrat Sanz
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191664820
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 518

Book Description
Thomas G. Bever's now iconic sentence, The horse raced past the barn fell, first appeared in his 1970 paper "The Cognitive Basis of Linguistic Structures". This 'garden path sentence', so-called because of the way it leads the reader or listener down the wrong parsing path, helped spawn the entire subfield of sentence processing. It has become the most often quoted element of a paper which spanned a wealth of research into the relationship between the grammatical system and language processing. Language Down the garden Path traces the lines of research that grew out of Bever's classic paper. Leading scientists review over 40 years of debates on the factors at play in language comprehension, production, and acquisition (the role of prediction, grammar, working memory, prosody, abstractness, syntax, and semantics mapping); the current status of universals and narrow syntax; and virtually every topic relevant in psycholinguistics since 1970. Written in an accessible and engaging style, the book will appeal to all those interested in understanding the questions that shaped, and are still shaping, this field and the ways in which linguists, cognitive scientists, psychologists, and neuroscientists are seeking to answer them.

The Path of Speech Technologies in Computer Assisted Language Learning

The Path of Speech Technologies in Computer Assisted Language Learning PDF Author: Melissa Holland
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135901473
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
This collection examines the promise and limitations for computer-assisted language learning of emerging speech technologies: speech recognition, text-to-speech synthesis, and acoustic visualization. Using pioneering research from contributors based in the US and Europe, this volume illustrates the uses of each technology for learning languages, the problems entailed in their use, and the solutions evolving in both technology and instructional design. To illuminate where these technologies stand on the path from research toward practice, the book chapters are organized to reflect five stages in the maturation of learning technologies: basic research, analysis of learners’ needs, adaptation of technologies to meet needs, development of prototypes to incorporate adapted technologies, and evaluation of prototypes. The volume demonstrates the progress in employing each class of speech technology while pointing up the effort that remains for effective, reliable application to language learning.

Blazing the Path

Blazing the Path PDF Author: Chima Anyadike
Publisher: African Books Collective
ISBN: 9780811842
Category : Igbo (African people) in literature
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
Blazing the Path. Fifty Years of Things Fall Apart is a collection of new perspectives on Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, a novel that was first published in 1958 and which has since become a classic of world literature. Aside from opening up the novel to new interpretive strategies of well established literary critics, and clarifying some past ones, this collection of essays repositions Things Fall Apart as a literary piece with interdisciplinary and multidimensional appeal. The volume fulfills the objective of using the novel to interrogate the colonial and pre-colonial African past with Nigeria's post-modern present, and projects the country into a future that looks to literature for a deeper understanding of where Nigeria is as a citizen of an emerging global village.

Complexity Perspectives on Language, Communication and Society

Complexity Perspectives on Language, Communication and Society PDF Author: Àngels Massip-Bonet
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642328172
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
The “language-communication-society” triangle defies traditional scientific approaches. Rather, it is a phenomenon that calls for an integration of complex, transdisciplinary perspectives, if we are to make any progress in understanding how it works. The highly diverse agents in play are not merely cognitive and/or cultural, but also emotional and behavioural in their specificity. Indeed, the effort may require building a theoretical and methodological body of knowledge that can effectively convey the characteristic properties of phenomena in human terms. New complexity approaches allow us to rethink our limited and mechanistic images of human societies and create more appropriate emo-cognitive dynamic and holistic models. We have to enter into dialogue with the complexity views coming out of other more ‘material’ sciences, but we also need to take steps in the linguistic and psycho-sociological fields towards creating perspectives and concepts better fitted to human characteristics. Our understanding of complexity is different – but not opposed – to the one that is more commonly found in texts written by people working in physics or computer science, for example. The goal of this book is to extend the knowledge of these other more ‘human’ or socially oriented perspectives on complexity, taking account of the language and communication singularities of human agents in society. The Path to Wholeness: Managing Emotions, Finding Healing, and Becoming Our Best Selves

The Path to Wholeness: Managing Emotions, Finding Healing, and Becoming Our Best Selves PDF Author: Mark Mayfield
Publisher: NavPress
ISBN: 1641585315
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 161

Book Description
Emotions are confusing, frustrating, and scary, but they don't have to be. Everyone experiences emotions--some easy, some difficult. Dealing with them should be common sense, and yet it isn't. Even though emotions are not uncommon to the human experience, we lack the language to fully understand and express them. This failure to understand can often lead to frustration and broken relationships. In The Path to Wholeness, Dr. Mark Mayfield teaches readers how to slow down and explore the way our emotions develop. He examines the toll unexpressed emotions take on an individual and highlights the importance of paying attention to them. Start your journey to emotional wholeness and be transformed. This book will challenge you to look inward at your own experience and your own history; reflect on how these things have shaped, informed, and influenced you, your family, and your relationships; dissect your current understanding of emotions, your emotional vocabulary, and your emotional responses; and follow practical and actionable steps to rethink and rework how you see and experience emotions.
