In the Shadow of Adam Smith

In the Shadow of Adam Smith PDF Author: Donald Rutherford
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1137008431
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
Adam Smith, who has towered over economics for more than two hundred years, was not alone in Scotland in creating systems of analysis which would explain how economies function and prosper. Writers of various backgrounds – there being no such profession as 'economist' – who were inspired by issues of the day as well as by the writings of Smith and other Scots, made significant contributions to the development of economic theory and policy that are often overlooked today. In the Shadow of Adam Smith, a landmark work in the history of economic thought, surveys and integrates the ideas of eighty Scottish writers from the 18th and 19th centuries to reveal a startlingly rich tapestry of argument and debate on a wide variety of economic subjects, both philosophical and practical, that remain highly pertinent today. Government debt, economic growth, banking, credit, taxation – all were tackled by this remarkable, diverse collection of writers. Through reading their contributions to economics we both understand modern economic issues and thought more deeply, and gain a richer understanding of Adam Smith's thought and inheritance. Written in a crisp and readable style with a minimum of technical detail, this is an ideal book for students of the history of economics, as well as academics and general readers.

Shadow Banking and the Rise of Capitalism in China

Shadow Banking and the Rise of Capitalism in China PDF Author: Andrew Collier
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811029962
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 205

Book Description
This book is about the growth of shadow banking in China and the rise of China’s free markets. Shadow Banking refers to capital that is distributed outside the formal banking system, including everything from Mom and Pop lending shops to online credit to giant state owned banks called Trusts. They have grown from a fraction of the economy ten years ago to nearly half of all China’s annual Rmb 25 trillion ($4.1 trillion) in lending in the economy today. Shadow Banks are a new aspect of capitalism in China – barely regulated, highly risky, yet tolerated by Beijing. They have been permitted to flourish because many companies cannot get access to formal bank loans. It is the Wild West of banking in China. If we define capitalism as economic activity controlled by the private sector, then Shadow Banking is still in a hybrid stage, a halfway house between the state and the private economic. But it is precisely this divide that makes Shadow Banking an important to the rise of capitalism. How Beijing handles this large free market will say a lot about how the country’s economy will grow – will free markets be granted greater leeway?

The Shadow in the Cave

The Shadow in the Cave PDF Author: Anthony Smith
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000595749
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
First published in 1973, The Shadow in the Cave explores the history of broadcasting conflicts and shows how they are built into the very roots of broadcasting. Every nation has built into its radio and television system a coded version of anxieties about the nature and effects of mass communication. The whole of the culture of broadcasting- its genres and its style – is an expression of the dilemmas which have bedevilled broadcasting form the moment of its invention. Anthony Smith’s book provides for the first time a connected and carefully researched picture of the real issues involved in the debate about broadcasting. This book shows how the argument about levels of taste in broadcasting, about balance and fairness, about trivialisation, control and freedom of access are elements of a gigantic problem which threatens the whole structure of democratic freedom. The book shows some of the path to be taken if broadcasting is not to undermine the basic notion of freedom of expression. Topical, subtle and revealing, this is an important historical document, a must read for scholars and researchers of media studies, news media, media history, mass communication and political studies.

Shadow over the Atlantic

Shadow over the Atlantic PDF Author: Robert Forsyth
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472820460
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
German U-boats were the scourge of Allied merchant and military shipping in the Atlantic during World War II, threatening to isolate and then starve the UK out of the War. As Germany's war against the Allied convoys intensified in late 1943, German Admiral Karl Dönitz called upon the Luftwaffe to provide a long-range spotting and shadowing unit to act as 'eyes' for his U-boats. Equipped with big, four-engined Junkers Ju 290s fitted out with advanced search radar and other maritime 'ELINT' (electronic intelligence) devices, Fernaufklärungsgruppe (FAGr) 5 'Atlantik' undertook a distant, isolated campaign far out into the Atlantic and thousands of miles away from its home base in western France. The information generated and reported back to Dönitz's headquarters was vital to the efforts of the U-boats, and FAGr 5's 'shadowing' missions were assigned priority in terms of skilled crews, supplies and equipment. This book tells for the first time the fascinating story of the formation and operations of FAGr 5 'Atlantik', drawing on never-before-published historical records of the unit that accounted for the reporting and destruction of thousands of tons of Allied shipping.

In the Shadow of the Swastika

In the Shadow of the Swastika PDF Author: Marzia Casolari
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000079074
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 201

Book Description
This book examines and establishes connections between Italian Fascism and Hindu nationalism, connections which developed within the frame of Italy’s anti-British foreign policy. The most remarkable contacts with the Indian political milieu were established via Bengali nationalist circles. Diplomats and intellectuals played an important role in establishing and cultivating those tie-ups. Tagore’s visit to Italy in 1925 and the much more relevant liaison between Subhas Chandra Bose and the INA were results of the Italian propaganda and activities in India. But the most meaningful part of this book is constituted by the connections and influences it establishes between Fascism as an ideology and a political system and Marathi Hindu nationalism. While examining fascist political literature and Mussolini’s figure and role, Marathi nationalists were deeply impressed and influenced by the political ideology itself, the duce and fascist organisations. These impressions moulded the RSS, a right-wing, Hindu nationalist organisation, and Hindutva ideology, with repercussions on present Indian politics. This is the most original and revealing part of the book, entirely based on unpublished sources, and will prove foundational for scholars of modern Indian history.

Category : History

Without language, not much else would exist: no writing, no computer – as a matter of fact, no technical or medical progress that make our lives less painful, and easier indeed; but also not some horrors that characterize our world. In fact, language is what defines humans and distinguishes them from other living beings – and is the basis of all other developments. How is it possible that something as complex and fascinating as 'language' has come into being at all? How does language 'work'? And how did it develop? What is common to all languages – and why are there so many? Further questions are how man began to write, and how printing developed – in which languages? Why not in any language? And does this teach us anything for further developments? In trying to answer these and other questions, we experience an exciting history of scientific research.
