Creating Spatial Information Infrastructures

Creating Spatial Information Infrastructures PDF Author: Peter van Oosterom
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781420070729
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
Initiatives, such as INSPIRE and the US DHS Geospatial Data Model, are working to develop a rich set of standards that will create harmonized models and themes for the spatial information infrastructure. However, this is only the first step. Semantically meaningful models must still be developed in order to stimulate interoperability. Creating Spatial Information Infrastructures (SII) presents solutions to the problems preventing the launch of a truly effective SII. Leading experts in SII development present a complete overview of SII, including user and application needs, theoretical and technological foundations, and examples of realized working SII’s. The book includes semantic applications in each discussion and explains their importance to the future of geo-information standardization. Offering practical solutions to technical and nontechnical obstacles, this book provides the tools needed to take the next step toward a working semantic web—one that will revolutionize the way the world accesses and utilizes spatial information.

Numerical Modelling of Discrete Materials in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences

Numerical Modelling of Discrete Materials in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences PDF Author: Heinz Konietzky
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9789058096807
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1022

Book Description
In this fully up-to-date volume, important new developments and applications of discrete element modelling are highlighted and brought together for presentation at the First International UDEC/3DEC Symposium. Papers covered the following key areas: * behaviour of masonry structures (walls, bridges, towers, columns) * stability and deformation of tunnels and caverns in fractured rock masses * geomechanical modelling for mining and waste repositories * rock reinforcement design (anchors, shotcrete, bolts) * mechanical and hydro-mechanical behaviour of dams and foundations * rock slope stability, deformation and failure mechanisms * modelling of fundamental rock mechanical problems * modelling of geological processes * constitutive laws for fractured rock masses and masonry structures * dynamic behaviour of discrete structures. Numerical Modelling of Discrete Materials in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Earth Sciences provides an ultra-modern, in-depth analysis of discrete element modelling in a range of different fields, thus proving valuable reading for civil, mining, and geotechnical engineers, as well as other interested professionals.

Geospatial Technology and the Role of Location in Science

Geospatial Technology and the Role of Location in Science PDF Author: Henk J. Scholten
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048126207
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
Globalisation has not led to the ‘death of geography’. Intensified relations between communities in different parts of the world have only highlighted the need for understanding and managing phenomena on a variety of geographic scales. From global warming to credit crunch, and from epidemics to terrorism, causes and solutions are sought on local, regional, national as well as inter-continental levels. With the advent of Geospatial Technology, scholars, policymakers and entrepreneurs have valuable tools in hand to proceed. This book offers the first systematic account of the science behind this mental and technological revolution. Tracing the adoption and dissemination of Geospatial Technology in a range of disciplines, it examines the impact this technology has had, and is likely to have, on the explanation of spatial behaviour, phenomena and processes. At the same time, stressing innovative usage, it explores scientific contributions to technology advancement.

Advanced Design and Manufacturing Based on STEP

Advanced Design and Manufacturing Based on STEP PDF Author: Xun Xu
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1848827393
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 495

Book Description
Design and manufacturing is the essential element in any product development lifecycle. Industry vendors and users have been seeking a common language to be used for the entire product development lifecycle that can describe design, manufacturing and other data pertaining to the product. Many solutions were proposed, the most successful being the Stadndard for Exchange of Product model (STEP). STEP provides a mechanism that is capable of describing product data, independent from any particular system. The nature of this description makes it suitable not only for neutral file exchange, but also as a basis for implementing, sharing and archiving product databases. ISO 10303-AP203 is the first and perhaps the most successful AP developed to exchange design data between different CAD systems. Going from geometric data (as in AP203) to features (as in AP224) represents an important step towards having the right type of data in a STEP-based CAD/CAM system. Of particular significance is the publication of STEP-NC, as an extension of STEP to NC, utilising feature-based concepts for CNC machining purposes. The aim of this book is to provide a snapshot of the recent research outcomes and implementation cases in the field of design and manufacturing where STEP is used as the primary data representation protocol. The 20 chapters are contributed by authors from most of the top research teams in the world. These research teams are based in national research institutes, industries as well as universities.
