The Gaelic Otherworld

The Gaelic Otherworld PDF Author: John Gregorson Campbell
Publisher: Birlinn Publishers
ISBN: 9781841582078
Category : Folklore
Languages : en
Pages : 856

Book Description
This volume contains two works on the Scottish Gaelic tradition -"Superstitions of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland" and "Witchcraft and Second Sight in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland". John Gregorson Campbell (1836-91) was one of a number of folklorists who collected and published the traditions of his native Highlands and Islands during the second half of the 19th century and the first few years of the 20th. He was the only one of the group who specialized in the area of superstitions. Much of the material presented in this work was collected during the 1850s - an early date which happens to be one of the two reasons for its value to us today as a record of genuine tradition. The other guarantee of the authenticity of this picture of the Gaelic otherworld is Campbell's rigorous attitude to truth. He had a legal training and, following the example set by his mentor, Campbell of Islay, he subscribed fully to the scientific demands of the new academic discipline of folklore studies. In addition to his biographical introduction, Ronald Black also provides explanatory endnotes and a new index.

Folklore of the Scottish Highlands

Folklore of the Scottish Highlands PDF Author: Anne Ross
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780752419046
Category : Folklore
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The folklore of the Scottish Highlands is unique and very much alive. Dr Anne Ross is a Gaelic-speaking scholar and archaeologist who has lived and worked in crofting communities. This has enabled her to collect information at first hand and to assess the veracity of material already published. In this substantially revised edition of a classic work first published 30 years ago, she portrays the beliefs and customs of Scottish Gaelic society, including: seasonal customs deriving from Celtic festivals; the famous waulking songs; the Highland tradition of seers and second sight; omens and taboos, both good and bad; and, chilling experiences of witchcraft and the Evil Eye Rituals associated with birth and death. Having taken her MA, MA Hons and PhD at the University of Edinburgh, Anne Ross became Research Fellow in the School of Scottish Studies, Edinburgh. She then rapidly established herself as one of Britain's leading Celtic scholars. Her seminal work is "Pagan Celtic Britain" and she has also published "Druids - Preachers of Immortality" with Tempus Publishing.

Áedán of the Gaels

Áedán of the Gaels PDF Author: Keith Coleman
Publisher: Pen and Sword Military
ISBN: 1526794918
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 243

Book Description
This is the first full-length work devoted to Áedán mac Gabráin, 6th century king of Dál Riata in Scotland. An associate of the famous St. Columba, he was the first recorded king to be ordained in the British Isles and was the most powerful ruler in his generation. His astonishing military reach took him from Orkney, Pictland, Ireland, Northumbria and the Isle of Man. This book details his dominant career, which came to a shattering end after decades of warfare at the Battle of Degsaston in AD 603. Beyond the record of warfare, there is a unique and tantalising accumulation of legend concerning Áedán, from stories about his birth, to tales of him in battle with Irish heroes. English sources mention him and he is one of the few Gaelic kings to feature prominently in Welsh tradition, where he is remembered as a uniquely powerful player in the north of Britain. Modern writers highlight Áedán as the father of a prince named Arthur, which has led to his place in Arthurian studies. Áedán’s prominence in his era qualifies him as a fascinating figure, whose life and legend are accessibly explored in this exciting account of this unique ruler.
